John Ruffin gets a windfall that enables him to take a seaside holiday. He takes Pollyooly and her brother along with him. Twice in the course of the story she is called to act the part of Lady Marion Ricksborough, the little peeress whom she so remarkably resembles, and in the second instance is instrumental in effecting a reconciliation between the duke and duchess, Lady Marions father and mother.

Edgar Alfred Jepson was an English writer, principally of mainstream adventure and detective fiction, but also of some supernatural and fantasy stories that are better remembered. The story Pollyooly. A Romance of Long Felt Wants and the Red Haired Girl Who Filled Them (1912) takes place prior to World War I. Pollyooly, whose given name is Mary Bride, is the 12-year-old housekeeper of John Ruffin, a London barrister. Pollyooly and her younger brother, Roger are orphans. Raised by their aunt in a village, they come to London when her aunt is swindled out of her lifes savings and forced to find work as Ruffins cook and housekeeper. When their aunt is killed by a motorist, Pollyooly tries to fill in for her aunt in order to keep both her and her brother out of the workhouse.

Edgar Jepson was a prolific English writer whose career spanned from the eighteen-nineties to the nineteen-thirties. He achieved fame principally for his entertaining mainstream detective and adventure stories, although he also wrote two fantasies, The Horned Shepherd and The Garden at 19. This novel was first published in 1920 and is along the lines of a classic whodunnit. Lord Loudwater is brash, short tempered and always bullying people. He was loved by none, feared by many and hated by all. When he is inexplicably found fatality stabbed with a letter opener, the list of suspects seems endless. Unfortunately for Detective Flexen, who is to investigate the case, Lord Loudwater was not a very agreeable sort of fellow and almost every person in his vicinity had a motive for the crime. Was it his young wife or her lover, his former fiancé or even one of the servants? If you like the old style crime novels where you are presented with a puzzle and have to try and work out who the killer is, then you should like this.

The Terrible Twins

The children, however, have little dread of poverty, for when ever they desire a luxury, such as a bicycle, or a fur stole for their mothers Christmas present, they devise some means to raise the necessary funds, and they stop at nothing from inducing a rich great-aunt to endow a home for cats to poaching for pheasants, and no matter what they do they always come out victorious, even when it comes to making or marring marriages. The Terrible Twins is written in a bright and amusing style and the author has indeed drawn upon a vivid imagination to think of all the scrapes and escapades in which the terrible twins are involved.
