The Grisly Horror

Robert E. Howard

The silence of the pine woods lay like a brooding cloak about the soul of Bristol McGrath. The black shadows seemed fixed, immovable as the weight of superstition that overhung this forgotten back-country. Vague ancestral dreads stirred at the back of McGraths mind; for he was born in the pine woods, and sixteen years of roaming about the world had not erased their shadows.

The Shadow Kingdom

Robert E. Howard

The blare of the trumpets grew louder, like a deep golden tide surge, like the soft booming of the evening tides against the silver beaches of Valusia. The throng shouted, women flung roses from the roofs as the rhythmic chiming of silver hosts came clearer and the first of the mighty array swung into view in the broad, white street that curved round the golden-spired Tower of Splendor.

The Mysterious Three

William Le Queux

We all got up from tea in the hall, made our way to the drawing-room, and thence into the morning-room, which opened out of it. There was plenty of daylight still. James came in after us, and went straight up to a framed panel portrait which stood with others on a small table in a remote corner. It showed a tall handsome, clean-shaved man of three or four and thirty, of fine physique, seated astride a chair, his arms folded across the back of the chair as he faced the camera.

The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet

William Shakespeare

A love story that everyone knows from infancy. We encounter two children at the beginning of the play, who do not yet represent what love, passion, desire are, but as soon as they get to know each other and understand that they cannot live without each other, they both change, become adults, independent. They are ready to act for their love, boldly step over obstacles and strive for each other. But so much divides them throughout the play that only death can reunite.
