Kandyd, czyli optymizm oświeceniowa satyryczna powiastka filozoficzna francuskiego filozofa Voltaire'a, po raz pierwszy wydana w 1759 r. Tytułowy bohater, Kandyd, który na początku powiastki żyje w cieplarnianych warunkach ("raju ziemskim") na zamku w Westfalii i jest karmiony przez swojego preceptora Panglossa leibnizowską filozofią optymizmu, na skutek nieszczęśliwego zbiegu okoliczności zostaje wygnany z tego raju i, tułając się po różnych krajach i kontynentach, przeżywa nieprawdopodobne przygody, które nieustannie wystawiają na szwank jego wiarę w dobroć świata. Na końcu powiastki Voltaire odrzuca twierdzenie Leibniza, jakoby ludzie żyli na "najlepszym z możliwych światów" i ustami Kandyda stawia tezę, że "trzeba uprawiać nasz ogródek". (Wikipedia)

Ends with family starting over after being swindled out of almost a million dollars and two sons being killed in the war. Although the story has some sadness to it, the family demonstrates an ability to overcome all obstacles, including loss of loved ones and family wealth. An inspiring, uplifting story.
