Mais comment l’auteur peut-il être sûr que sa pièce effrayera le public ? Il juge tout simplement l’effet qu’elle produira sur les autres par l’effet qu’elle produit sur lui-même. Un sujet se présente à mon esprit : je ne sais pas du tout pourquoi tous les détails horribles s’imposent à moi aussitôt, avec une hâte presque instantanée : je suis ému, impressionné, terrorisé ; j’en conclus que les autres le seront aussi. Il y a des sujets si effrayants que je n’ai pas osé les mettre à la scène, parce que d’autres sujets, que je n’avais pas trouvés terribles, avaient par trop épouvanté les spectateurs.  Une comparaison me vient : elle est peut-être trop familière, mais son exactitude excuse sa familiarité. Les pharmaciens sont arrivés à condenser de fortes doses de médicaments très violents dans certains « comprimés » d’un tout petit volume, faciles à absorber : de même, je m’efforce de fabriquer des « comprimés de terreur ».
