Horror lub inaczej film grozy zakłada taką konstrukcję dramaturgiczną, której zadaniem jest stopniowe wprowadzanie widza w stan lęku, który narasta. Film grozy posiada wiele odmian, co świadczy o jego popularności w historii, jak również o niegasnącym zainteresowaniu widzów i filmoznawców tym gatunkiem. Z tej różnorodności wybieramy jeden film, ponieważ jest to swoisty fenomen: „Gabinet doktora Caligari” (1919) Roberto Wiene’a. Atmosfera Republiki Weimarskiej stanowi tło, z którego wyrasta ekspresjonizm filmowy oraz rozwija się jako kierunek myślowy i prąd artystyczny. Kazimir Edschmid uważa, że ekspresjonista „przestaje widzieć”, ekspresjonista po prostu ma wizję. Gabinet doktora Caligari odzwierciedla stan duchowy całego społeczeństwa i jest odczuwalny jako zagrożenie, depresja, bunt. Dlatego historia tu opowiedziana nie jest prosta, nie da się jej ocenić jednoznacznie, nawet w wymiarze jednostkowym. Powstało w ten sposób dzieło bogate w liczne odniesienia. Ciężar gatunkowy poruszonych tutaj problemów znacznie wykracza poza zakres przedstawionych tu rozważań i może stanowić ciekawe źródło inspiracji do dalszych badań. Książka stanowi cenny wkład w badania poświęcone kinu grozy oraz poszerzenie dotychczasowej wiedzy na ten temat.
