Brigitte Bardot okrzyknięto dziwaczką i wariatką, po tym jak u szczytu sławy, w wieku 39 lat porzuciła aktorstwo i poświęciła się opiece nad zwierzętami. Julia Roberts, praktykująca hinduistka, przed laty nie schodziła z planu. Jej pierwsze małżeństwo rozpadło się, bo nie godziła pracy z życiem rodzinnym. Czym więc jest ta książka? Zbiorowym portretem kobiecej odwagi, talentu, poświęcenia i wyrzeczeń, ale również próby ocalenia w gigantycznej machinie przemysłu filmowego własnej tożsamości. The secret of the league is a dystopian novel written by Ernest Bramah in 1907. It was first published as What might have been: the story of a social war, but later was republished in 1909 as The secret of the league. The Secret of the League is kind of an underground oddity of a novel. Its a prophetic-warning novel, science fiction before that term was coined, largely sociopolitical but also with some charming technical extrapolations. The story centers around one mans daring and ingenious plan, enacted through a mysterious alliance called the Unity League, to stop the workings of the nations elected government in order to restore some measure of lost freedom and greatness, even at the risk of civil war. Its plot is developed rather patchily, and like most warning novels, was overtaken by real events and didnt come true. The Secret of the League was written, when the growth of the labour movement was beginning to terrify the middle class, who wrongly imagined that they were menaced from below rather than from above.

Kara ben Nemsi ist mit Hadschi Halef Omar und dessen Familie unterwegs nach Mekka. Unterwegs müssen sie einige Abenteuer bestehen. Auf einer Reise durch die arabische Wüste stoßen sie auf einen geheimnisvollen blinden Seher. Sie helfen dabei, den heiligen Schatz der Glieder zurückzuerobern, was wiederum zur Folge hat, dass sie bald darauf von Beduinen angegriffen werden und Kara gefangengenommen wird. Ein wirklich lesenswertes Buch, auch abgesehen von seinem Abenteuercharakter.

Edith Whartons 1913 novel is a devastating critique of American upward mobility, told through the journey of Undine Spragg from fictional Midwestern Apex City to New York to Paris. Undine Spragg is one of the most ruthless characters in all of literature, as selfishly unscrupulous as she is fiercely beautiful. As Undine climbs the social ladder through a series of marriages and affairs, she shows little concern for who she has to step on to get anything and everything she desires. Wharton weaves an elaborate plot that renders a detailed depiction of upper class social behavior in the early twentieth century. By utilizing a character with inexorable greed in a novel of manners, she demonstrates some of the customs of a modern age and posits a surprising explanation for divorce and the social role of women, which still resonates for the modern reader today.
