A classic tale of the Old West by B.M. Bower. This one is one of her earliest (1918). This was an interesting story about a man who quarrels with his young wife and goes out into the world to try to forget her. Cabin Fever gets Bud Moore into a peck of trouble now and then. Bud is a bit too trustful of strangers and before he knows it, he has injected himself into a situation that could prove to be disastrous. Bud then heads for the hills and meets up with another stranger. Then, one day, Bud finds a child who has been stolen by an Indian squaw and takes him in. How will the childs presence change the two hardened men? The surprise ending is a nice touch, by the author.

"California Joe, the Mysterious Plainsman" is a book first published in 1900 written by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham who was a Colonel in the Confederate Army, a professional military officer throughout the 1860s, and a prolific author of books on the American West. It is a dime novel, a very short novel, about the life of a young man who acts as if he is immortal. At first, many characters in the book think that Joe is a ghost or a "spook" because of his all black clothes and solid white horse. Soon, however, Joe introduces himself to a group of people who are laying train tracks across the prairie. He guides them and saves them from Indians on many occasions. Throughout the entire book, Joe is saving somebody from Indians or capturing thieves. He is the stereotypical cowboy who saves the day and rides off into the sunset. This book is a wonderful light novel and is also important for what it reveal about American cultural history at the time of its publication.

Nie przedsiębrałem powieści; chciałem tylko w szeregu obrazów charakterystyczniejszych odmalować tę chwilę, dla całej ludzkości stanowczą, która przedziela dwa zupełnie odmienne światy, dwie wielkie epoki żywota dziejowego. Nie ośmieliłem się też porwać na historyę, którą już raz skreśliło energiczne pióro Tacyta z siłą niezrównaną. Zwiedzenie miejsc dało nam gotowe tło i niemal widzenie jawne przeszłości, której tu jeszcze mnóstwo pozostało śladów żywych i wybitnych. Chcieliśmy rzecz naszą dokonać sumiennie przedsięwziętą z miłością prawdy, zaczętą z zapałem, rzucamy z żalem prawie, życząc czytelnikom, aby tyle znaleźli przyjemności w czytaniu tego studium, ileśmy, kreśląc go, doznali; prosimy ich jednak, by nie zapominali, że im wcale nie obiecujemy powieści...
