Trudno zliczyć napadane folwarki, złupione zamki, okradzione wille, a nawet morderstwa spełnione na mieszkańcach, stawiających opór niepochwytnym złoczyńcom. Sądząc z wielu poszlak, ten szereg zbrodni nie mógł być dziełem pojedynczych zbrodniarzy. Należało przypuszczać istnienie bandy dobrze zorganizowanej i zapewne licznej, oceniając z dokonanych przez nią czynów. Lecz co było dziwne, że banda ta działała tylko w najbliższem sąsiedztwie Dunaju, w odległości dwóch kilometrów od rzeki złoczyńcy nie dawali już znaku życia. Ale same wybrzeża w granicach państwa austrjackiego, węgierskiego, serbskiego czy rumuńskiego, były pustoszone przez bandytów, których nie udawało się nigdy pochwycić na uczynku. Po dokonaniu zbrodni znikali oni aż do nowego napadu, który zdarzał się nieraz o setki kilometrów od poprzedniego. W przerwach między jednem a drugiem przepadały wszelkie ślady zbrodniarzy, jakby się rozpłynęli w powietrzu; ulatniali się razem z łupem, niekiedy bardzo obfitym i ciężkim. / Depuis plusieurs mois, en effet, les rives du Danube étaient désolées par un perpétuel brigandage. On ne comptait plus les fermes dévalisées, les châteaux pillés, les villas cambriolées, les meurtres mme, plusieurs personnes ayant payé de leur vie la résistance quelles tentaient dopposer dinsaisissables malfaiteurs. De toute évidence, une telle série de crimes navait pu tre accomplie par quelques individus isolés. On avait certainement affaire une bande bien organisée, et sans doute fort nombreuse, en juger par ses exploits. Circonstance singulire, cette bande nopérait que dans le voisinage immédiat du Danube. Au del de deux kilomtres de part et dautre du fleuve, jamais un seul crime navait pu lui tre légitimement attribué. Toutefois, le théâtre de ses opérations ne paraissait ainsi limité que dans le sens de la largeur, et les rives autrichiennes, hongroises, serbes ou roumaines étaient pareillement mises sac par ces bandits, quon ne parvenait nulle part prendre sur le fait. Leur coup accompli, ils disparaissaient jusquau prochain crime, commis parfois des centaines de kilomtres du précédent. Dans lintervalle, on ne trouvait deux aucune trace. Ils semblaient stre volatilisés, ainsi que les objets matériels, parfois trs encombrants, qui représentaient leur butin.

Unlike most of his race, Morn eschewed violence and actively sought peace among the other tribes of Ancient England. The Picts are savage, bestial, un-united; and Bran Mak Morn desires to bring his nation out of savagery, to bring it back to the civilization of their fathers. The Bran Mak Morn tales are littered with supernatural nasties and plenty of action. Highly recommended for fans of fantasy, historical fiction, and Robert E. Howard.

Robert E. Howard is famous for creating such immortal heroes as Conan the Cimmerian, Solomon Kane, and Bran Mak Morn. Less well-known but equally extraordinary are his non-fantasy adventure stories set in the Middle East and featuring such hero as Francis Xavier Gordon. Texas gunfighter F. X. Gordon traveled the world before settling in 1920s Afghanistan. The Afghans dubbed him El Borak for his quick thinking and skill with a sword and gun. The respected Gordon frequently mitigated tribal wars and conflict through guile or, barring that, violence. Contrary to Howards reputation, these were straight adventure stories with no supernatural elements. Every fan of Robert E.
