Edgar Wallace
The Undisclosed Client is a collection of short stories published between 1904 and 1929 from the British Mysteries master Edgar Wallace, directly from the Golden Era of the genre. Edgar Wallace was an English novelist, journalist and playwright, who was an enormously popular writer of detective, suspense stories, and practically invented the modern thriller. His popularity at the time was comparable to that of Charles Dickens. The stories are fast-paced, with good twists and turns, an unusual criminal scheme and a little romance. These genuine mystery stories take the reader from one exciting adventure to another with all the adroitness and ingenuity of Mr. Wallaces previous successful books. The book highly recommended for people who like to treat a mystery story as a solvable riddle.
The Undying Fire. A Contemporary Novel
Herbert George Wells
Dedicated to all schoolmasters and schoolmistresses and every teacher in the world, this re-interpretation of the Book of Job is one of the authors finest discussion novels. Written in 1918, this is the story of Job Huss, the headmaster of a progressive school. It is saturated with the ideas of educational reform and of the teaching of world history as the basis for a common civilization and is one of his most ambitious dialogue narratives. Essentially it is a modernized parody of the book of Job, a prose poem which Wells greatly admired, though not particularly religious, as can be seen from his logical Science Fiction writing. In The Undying Fire, Wells give us an updated Book of Job, focusing on the tribulations of an actual descendant of the biblical Job. The various characters from the Biblical narrative are all there, in updated form.

The book by Michał Maksymilian Borwicz (1911-1987), reissued for the first time after 68 years, is an unusual testimony of a prisoner of the Janowska Camp in Lviv, where even 200,000 Galician Jews might have died, according to historians. Borwicz’s book is written in the form of a historical short story. Reading it brings to mind associations with the famous book by Solzhenitsyn, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, though all Borwicz’s characters are real. The book consists of two parts – The university of criminals and an extensive appendix, including four texts: an introduction (by Eleonora Bergman), Borwicz’s biography (by Edyta Gawron), an outline of the history of the Lviv Jews (by Leon Perlman) and the history of the Janowska Camp (by Adam Redzik).

The heroes must battle the human challenges of greed, ruthlessness, and ambition, as well as the tremendous challenges of nature, to make the rail connection between East and West. The U. P. Trail is one of Zane Greys most detailed and panoramic Western novels; indeed, it is first-rate historical fiction in addition to being one of his most gripping romance-adventures.
B.M. Bower
Beloved Western author B. M. Bower is back with another classic yarn of the Old West. Much like her best-known works, The Uphill Climb showcases the inner lives of the cowhands and ranchers who made the region livable and whose rough-and-tumble lifestyles all too often exacted a harsh toll. Also this story deals with one mans fight to overcome alcohol addiction. Still very relevant to today. But it also has romance and a good bit of humor from supporting characters. Bower knows the West of the cowboys, as do few writers... the writing is realistic, and strongly suffused with local color. One of many recommended Westerns by this prolific author.
William J. Locke
The Usurper is an affair with two heroes and two heroines. The double plot of love and ambition, in which fate. four intersect each other. The romance of the poet who dies young, loved by all men and women, is very cute. moving. But a greater interest in the book is to find out the life and character of Jasper Wellacot: a millionaire who is so amazingly flabbergasted in his wealth, a philanthropist who is almost ashamed of his good deeds.
R. Austin Freeman
In this tightly plotted novel, we follow the bizarre career of a man who loathes criminals. After Humphrey Challoner finds his wife killed by the bullet of a robber in his home, he vows to catch the man. Mr. Challoner is a wealthy savant, and he saved the fingerprints of the robber as well as some of the robbers strange hair which Challoners wife had in her hand. For twenty years Humphrey hunts for the killer, in the process revenging himself on Londons criminals class in a surprising and gruesome fashion. This Freeman work is not a Dr. Thorndyke mystery. Instead, it is the disturbing account of how a man wreaks vengeance on the miscreant who murdered his wife in a bungled robbery attempt. It also poses the question of how a moral society should deal with criminals.
