An mei­ne ge­treu­en Hö­rer(Statt ei­ner Vor­re­de) Als ich da­r­an­ging die ,,Tre­ny" Kocha­now­skis ins Deut­sche zu über­tra­gen, war ich über­zeugt, dass mein Un­ter­neh­men in Po­len leb­haf­ten An­klang fin­den wer­de. Ich glaub­te mich da­zu um­so­mehr be­rech­tigt, als ja be­reits mei­ne Über­set­zung von Kocha­now­skis Dra­ma) einen un­ge­wöhn­li­chen Er­folg zu ver­zeich­nen hat­te. Das Stück wur­de im Rah­men ei­ner groß­an­ge­leg­ten Kocha­now­ski­fei­er von der Deut­schen Büh­ne in Brom­berg (Byd­gosz­cz) glän­zend in Sze­ne ge­setzt, und so­wohl je­ne denk­wür­di­ge Auf­füh­rung, als auch mein Buch er­freu­ten sich weit über die Gren­zen hin­aus in der Pres­se Deutsch­lands, Frank­reichs, ja selbst Ame­ri­kas spal­ten­lan­ger Be­spre­chun­gen, in de­nen fast aus­nahms­los von der ho­hen kul­tu­rel­len Be­deu­tung die­ses Er­eig­nis­ses die Re­de war. Ich glau­be kaum, dass ei­ne zwei­te Über­set­zung aus dem Pol­ni­schen, sei es in wel­che Spra­che im­mer, sich im neu­en Po­len auf ei­ne ähn­li­che ,,pro­pa­gan­dis­ti­sche<< Wir­kung be­ru­fen könn­te. Auch mei­ne frü­he­ren Er­fah­run­gen in Böh­men, wo gleich mei­ne ers­ten schüch­ter­nen An­fän­ge freund­li­cher Auf­nah­me be­geg­ne­ten und man mir von al­len Sei­ten be­reit­wil­ligst jeg­li­che Un­ter­stüt­zung an­bot, -- auch die­se sym­pa­thi­schen Er­fah­run­gen, die ich noch in lie­ber Er­in­ne­rung he­ge, lie­ßen mich er­war­ten, dass man end­lich auch hier, wo so viel von ,,kul­tu­rel­ler Pro­pa­gan­da<< ge­spro­chen und ge­schrie­ben wird, we­nigs­tens in die­sem Fal­le die Be­deut­sam­keit und Trag­wei­te mei­ner Ar­beit be­grei­fen wer­de. Syn zamożnego ziemianina, studiował w Akademii Krakowskiej (1544-1547) oraz na uniwersytetach w Królewcu i Padwie (1555-1559). Podróżował po Włoszech i Francji, gdzie poznał poetów Plejady (Ronsard). Po powrocie do Polski dzięki biskupowi Myszkowskiemu rozpoczął karierę na dworze Zygmunta Augusta, w 1563 r. został sekretarzem królewskim. Ok. 1575 r. ożenił się i osiadł na wsi. Śmierć jednej z córek stała się pobudką do napisania oryginalnego cyklu trenów. Zmarł nagle na serce. W jego pogrzebie uczestniczył król Stefan Batory, kanclerz J.
