Great Expectations - a novel by Charles Dickens, an English writer who is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.   On Christmas Eve, Pip, an orphan about seven years old, is visiting the graves of his parents and siblings in the village churchyard, where he unexpectedly encounters an escaped prisoner. The convict scares Pip into stealing food and tools from Pip's hot-tempered elder sister and her amiable husband, Joe Gargery, a blacksmith, who have taken the orphan in.

You will find some fascinating glimpses of the period in her books, as well as a substantial dose of romance and adventure. There were two of them as unlike as two men could be. Sir Eustace, big, domineering, haughty, used to sweeping all before him with the power of his personality. The other was Stumpy, small, insignificant, quiet, with a little limp. They clashed over the greatest question that may come to men the love of a girl. This story opens in a pleasing resort in the Swiss Alps, the heroine is sweet and charmingly naive. Did she choose wisely? Is Greatheart more to be desired than great riches? The answer is the most vivid and charming story that Ethel M. Dell has written in a long time.

Z tunelu metra przy Greenpoint Avenue po raz pierwszy wyszłam na powierzchnię w sierpniu 2001 roku i była to fascynacja od pierwszego wejrzenia. Greenpoint nie przypominał żadnego polskiego miasteczka, a jego mieszkańcy żadnej społeczności między Odrą a Bugiem. Niczego takiego w Polsce nie było. Greenpoint zdawał się po prostu syropem z Polski. Polską zagęszczoną, słabo rozpuszczającą się w nowojorskim roztworze. Dla kogoś takiego jak ja, kto na progu dorosłego życia pragnął rozłożyć, usystematyzować, obejrzeć z kilku stron i odłożyć na właściwe miejsce elementy własnej tożsamości, stał się najlepszym środowiskiem.
