Koncepcja zastosowania trójfazowego prądu Tesli do przesyłu elektryczności na duże odległości znalazła poparcie George’a Westinghouse’a, podczas kiedy Thomas Edison optował za tym, aby zostać przy prądzie stałym i rozwiązaniach, które opracował. Trzeba tutaj jednak zaznaczyć, że wynalazek Nikoli Tesli był znakomitym udoskonaleniem koncepcji, której autorstwo należy przypisać Edisonowi. Koncepcji dystrybucji prądu elektrycznego i światła, którą stworzył i rozwinął Thomas Alva Edison. Nie chcąc stawać po żadnej ze stron, chciałbym ten wstęp uzupełnić pewną refleksją. To dzięki kompanii Edisona dwudziestoośmioletni Tesla znalazł się w Stanach Zjednoczonych i odtąd ich losy zaczęły się przeplatać, gdyż początkowo Nikola Tesla znalazł zatrudnienie u Edisona. W toku realizacji różnych przedsięwzięć w przetargach firma Westinghouse Electric Lamp konkurowała z firmą General Electric Edisona. Nie był to jedyny kierunek działalności Edisona, który już wówczas był potentatem zatrudniającym na całym świecie około dwóch milionów ludzi. Idealizm, wręcz prometeizm Tesli napotkał konkurenta w postaci, która jeszcze wcześniej, w czasie pobierania nauki w Europie stała się dla niego wielką inspiracją. Pragmatyzm Edisona miał twarde podstawy w lekcji życia, którą odebrał. Należy jednak pamiętać, że tak jak obaj trafili do Nowego Jorku bez grosza, tak obaj zrobili w nim zawrotne kariery. Obaj byli zwycięzcami, a zawiązanie się między nimi rywalizacji, wpisywało się w trend kapitalizmu, który wtenczas w Nowym Jorku był bezwzględny. Mimo to należy dostrzec, że fakt ich rywalizacji w czasach, gdy urzędowali po dwóch stronach Piątej Alei w Nowym Jorku stymulował zarówno Nikolę Teslę, jak i Thomasa Edisona do intensywnej pracy i to właśnie konkurencja jest największym motorem rozwoju. Trzeba wiedzieć o tym, że nie za wszystkie z kontrowersyjnych pokazów, które miały miejsce i miały na celu pokazanie niebezpieczeństw stosowania trójfazowego prądu zmiennego poprzez uśmiercanie zwierząt odpowiadał sam Edison, a kwestia niewypłaconych przez niego pieniędzy (chodziło o kwotę rzędu pięćdziesięciu tysięcy dolarów) wywołała w życiu Tesli kryzys, który znalazł jednak dobre zakończenie. To w jego wyniku spotkał on finalnie George’a Westinghouse’a, jego wieloletniego przyjaciela, który zaoferował mu fantastyczne warunki finansowe w zamian za udostępnienie swoich patentów. Niniejsza biografia ukazuje postać Thomasa Edisona z jego ludzkiej i pogodnej strony. Dzięki niej odkryjemy nie tylko wybitnego eksperymentatora, ale zrozumiemy istotę jego odkryć i towarzyszących im procesów. Poznamy postać wybitnego, człowieka w jego czasach, człowieka, który bez cienia wątpliwości był tym, który otworzył nowy rozdział w historii rozwoju cywilizacji.

Ghost stories, bizarre adventures, strange appearances and disappearances, and improbable love are the themes of these very enjoyable stories by the master storyteller. Young men courting women, psychic phenomena, and humorous characters abound. Those Other Days stories are almost Victorian in their diction and flavor, with some of the fascination of the period for supernatural events. If you havent discovered the joys of Oppenheims stories, which are clearly written and literary there is a good place to start. Highly recommended!

Das Stück wurde im Rahmen einer großangelegten Kochanowskifeier von der Deutschen Bühne in Bromberg (Bydgoszcz) glänzend in Szene gesetzt, und sowohl jene denkwürdige Aufführung, als auch mein Buch erfreuten sich weit über die Grenzen hinaus in der Presse Deutschlands, Frankreichs, ja selbst Amerikas spaltenlanger Besprechungen, in denen fast ausnahmslos von der hohen kulturellen Bedeutung dieses Ereignisses die Rede war. Ich glaube kaum, dass eine zweite Übersetzung aus dem Polnischen, sei es in welche Sprache immer, sich im neuen Polen auf eine ähnliche ,,propagandistische<< Wirkung berufen könnte. Auch meine früheren Erfahrungen in Böhmen, wo gleich meine ersten schüchternen Anfänge freundlicher Aufnahme begegneten und man mir von allen Seiten bereitwilligst jegliche Unterstützung anbot, -- auch diese sympathischen Erfahrungen, die ich noch in lieber Erinnerung hege, ließen mich erwarten, dass man endlich auch hier, wo so viel von ,,kultureller Propaganda<< gesprochen und geschrieben wird, wenigstens in diesem Falle die Bedeutsamkeit und Tragweite meiner Arbeit begreifen werde.
