O poezji naiwnej i sentymentalnej, Teatr jako instytucja moralna); interesowały go także wybrane tematy historyczne, przede wszystkim z okresu średniowiecza oraz wojny trzydziestoletniej. Uznawany za prekursora romantyzmu niem., jego twórczość, ze względu na krytykę stosunków społecznych czy portretowanie postaci wybitnych samotników skłóconych ze światem, wpisuje się w idee Okresu Burzy i Naporu, Schiller pozostaje jednak jednym z głównych przedstawicieli klasyki weimarskiej, obok Goethego, z którym wiązała go głęboka przyjaźń. Wspólnie napisali kilka istotnych tekstów, np. O patetyczności oraz humorystyczne Ksenie, razem też założyli w 1799 r. teatr w Weimarze. Pochodził z niezamożnej rodziny mieszczańskiej. Jako zdolny młodzieniec zyskał sobie mecenasa w osobie księcia Wirtembergii, Karola Eugeniusza, który umożliwił mu wyższą edukację w zakresie prawa i medycyny w akademii wojskowej w Stuttgarcie. Pierwszą i najsławniejszą ze swoich sztuk napisał mając zaledwie 18 lat, jej premiera w 1781 r. w Mannheim zaowocowała aresztowaniem autora, zakazem publikacji oraz - rozgłosem. Po tym skandalu zmuszony był potajemnie opuścić rodzinne strony i wyjechał do Lipska (gdzie z lekarza wojskowego awansował na wykładowcę filozofii i historii), Drezna, a następnie Weimaru. Drugi z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych utworów Schillera, Oda do radości, powstała w 1786 r. Skomponowana do jej słów przez Beethovena kantata stanowi finał jego IX symfonii, a dziś także hymn Unii Europejskiej. Z powodu treści Zbójców Schiller został uhonorowany obywatelstwem przez rewolucyjną Francję, jednak trudno uznać go za entuzjastę Wielkiej Rewolucji, dostrzegał bowiem dwuznaczność moralną wszelkich prób przywracania sprawiedliwości w sposób gwałtowny. Zmarł na gruźlicę, pozostawiając wiele niedokończonych prac oraz szkiców. Kupując książkę wspierasz fundację Nowoczesna Polska, która propaguje ideę wolnej kultury.
