The monograph entitled "The Importance of Universities for Society and Economy. The Experience of Researchers from the Visegrad Group" was made by 28 authors representing 12 universities from the Visegrad Group. The intention of the authors is to answer the question about the role of universities and the relevance of research they conduct for the construction of sustainable societies and modern economies in conditions of volatile the environments. Addressing the problems discussed in this monograph from the perspective of the experience of researchers from Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary, corresponds with the important direction in the development of science, namely its internationalisation. The monograph consists of three parts. The first concerns the functioning of universities and directions in the development of education, as well as the scientific research conducted in the context of the sustainability crisis, and the need to expand the scope of implementation of the sustainable development concept. The considerations included in the second part of the monograph regard academic teaching and areas of research emerging in the context of the ongoing technological progress, particularly visible in the growing use of artificial intelligence, and the need to develop digital competencies. The third part presents the results of research undertaken in view of finding research gaps resulting from changes in the geopolitical and social conditions produced by the COVID-19 pandemic
The role and functions of controllers in organization management

The main objective of this monograph is to determine on the basis of the survey the role of controllers in contemporary Polish companies. The study confirmed that same of the tasks performed by contemporary controllers in Polish companies are the same as those performed by their counterparts around the world although same differences were also identified. Comparing the current role of controllers in Polish organizations with their role in foreign companies can contribute to improving the controller’s image in the organizations, and change the attitude of other employees to management accountants. This may lead to better cooperation between individual departments and controllers, and therefore to the mare efficient functioning of the company.

Scientists in general agree that processes of ecosystem change, including climate change and loss of biodiversity, have reached a stage where it is no longer possible to avoid negative effects for humanity and the world economy. Our era is called the Anthropocene, which means that humans are the predominant instigator of change at a planetary level. A shift towards a green economy seems to be a reasonable course of action, giving hope of halting the negative trends of development and the transition to more sustainable development. This book is a contribution to the ongoing discussion on the current desired track of the development of society and the economy. Istniejące dziś praktycznie w każdym miasteczku na terenie kraju banki spółdzielcze stanowią ważny element w ich życiu ekonomicznym, a także społecznym i kulturalnym. Te popularne w lokalnych ośrodkach instytucje bankowe wywodzą swój początek od powstających na szeroką skalę na przełomie XIX i XX w. na ziemiach polskich towarzystw pożyczkowo-oszczędnościowych. Publikacja dotyczy istotnego rozdziału życia gospodarczego na ziemiach polskich – dziejów taniego kredytu w latach 1867–1914. Autor przedstawia tempo rozwoju towarzystw oszczędnościowo-pożyczkowych, jak również udział różnych grup społecznych w ich tworzeniu, w guberni kaliskiej, niezbyt silnie uprzemysłowionym rejonie Królestwa Polskiego.
