Niniejsza praca sytuuje się w nurcie badań genologicznych uwzględniającym w opisie gatunków zarówno kategorie pragmatyczno-semantyczne, jak też założenia stylistyki, dyskursu oraz aksjologii. Obrazkowy słownik języka polskiego adresowany jest zarówno do tych, którzy naukę rozpoczynają, jak i do tych, którzy chcieliby poszerzyć swoją znajomość polskiego słownictwa bądź utrwalić już poznane słowa. Wszystkie artykuły hasłowe Słownika, zdefiniowane są za pomocą kolorowych tablic i obrazków. Dzięki zastosowaniu takiej techniki możliwe było uniknięcie wielu kłopotów związanych z definiowaniem pojęć podstawowych, które stanowią zasadniczy korpus słownika. Obrazkowy słownik języka polskiego prezentuje znaczenie około 2000 jednostek leksykalnych. Najliczniej zilustrowane zostały rzeczowniki, ale reprezentowane są także czasowniki, przymiotniki oraz zaimki. Udział poszczególnych części mowy w materiale leksykalnym Słownika można uzasadnić ich udziałem w zasobie słów, którymi posługuje się przeciętny użytkownik języka polskiego (wg badań M. Zarębiny rzeczowniki stanowią około 50% tego zasobu, podczas gdy czasowniki i przymiotniki, to odpowiednio około 22% i 18%). Materiał leksykalny słownika został przedstawiony w 32 polach tematycznych, których zakres dostosowano do potrzeb przyszłych użytkowników. Uznano bowiem, że grupowanie i prezentacja materiału leksykalnego słownika w polach tematycznych będzie bardziej trafna niż prezentacja wyrazów w porządku alfabetycznym, ponieważ słowa będą występować w naturalnym dla nich kontekście, co znacznie ułatwi ich identyfikację oraz zapamiętanie. Każde pole tematyczne to, w zależności od rozmiarów pola, jedna lub więcej tablic. W sekcji gramatycznej (tablice 33-36) zamiast tablic wykorzystane zostały pojedyncze obrazki. Każdy definiowany element planszy czy też pojedynczy obrazek opatrzony jest numerem. Numerowi temu odpowiada wyraz znajdujący się na sąsiedniej stronie. Na końcu słownika zamieszczony został indeks alfabetyczny wszystkich jednostek leksykalnych definiowanych przez słownik, wraz z informacją, na której tablicy (lub tablicach) dana jednostka została zilustrowana. Wszystkie artykuły hasłowe indeksu zawierają informację, do jakiej części mowy dany wyraz należy. Formą hasłową rzeczownika jest mianownik liczby pojedynczej. Po formie hasłowej słownik podaje oznaczenie rodzaju rzeczownika, a następnie pełne formy dopełniacza i miejscownika liczby pojedynczej. W wypadku rzeczowników męskoosobowych słownik dodatkowo podaje mianownik liczby mnogiej. Pilotażowe badania błędów popełnianych przez obcokrajowców uczących się polskiego pokazały, że to właśnie te przypadki są dla nich najtrudniejsze. Główną postacią hasłową czasownika jest bezokolicznik. Słownik ilustracjami definiuje znaczenie podstawowe czasowników niedokonanych. W indeksie natomiast znaleźć można ich dokonane odpowiedniki. Przymiotnik podany został w mianowniku liczby pojedynczej rodzaju męskiego wraz z formą stopnia wyższego. Obrazkowy słownik języka polskiego to doskonała pomoc wizualna do nauczania języka polskiego. Może on także być użyteczny w życiu codziennym i przydatny nie tylko dla uczących się języka, ale także dla zagranicznych turystów podróżujących po Polsce, tym bardziej, że zamieszczony na końcu Słownika indeks alfabetyczny zawiera także odpowiedniki polskich słów w językach: angielskim, francuskim i niemieckim.
