“Smoke Bellew” is a book by Jack London, an American novelist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction. Smoke Bellew Jack London's adventure novel, set in Alaska, during the "gold rush". The title character, Christopher Bellew, is a young man from a good home, educated, resident of a big city, working in the editorial office of one of the newspapers. When, during a meeting with his uncle, he learns about a planned trip to Alaska, he decides to take part in it. During the first days of the journey, Christopher discovers his physical weakness and a complete lack of preparation for the hard life of a pioneer and gold digger.

Smutne dialogi nie powstały z myślą o teatralnej inscenizacji na wielkich scenach. Ich formuła bliższa była felietonowi niż klasycznemu dramatowi. Stanowiły one zbiór satyrycznych kronik, których celem było ukazanie - w sposób celny, często przejaskrawiony i bezlitosny - prawdziwego oblicza francuskiego społeczeństwa mieszczańskiego u schyłku XIX wieku. Wówczas kronika literacka była formą o płynnych granicach - hybrydowym gatunkiem łączącym elementy dziennikarstwa, eseju, satyry, a niekiedy nawet prozy artystycznej. Autorzy nie byli skrępowani formalnymi zasadami, przeciwnie - wykorzystywali swobodę stylu i tonu, aby w atrakcyjnej formie komentować aktualne wydarzenia i obyczaje. W tym kontekście Smutne dialogi wpisują się w tradycję literatury zaangażowanej, w której ironia i groteska stają się narzędziami przenikliwego demaskowania społecznych iluzji, hipokryzji i przywar epoki.
Some Renaissance/ Early Modern Topoi in the Twenty First Century

This collection of essays is in part the result of an international research project “Revisiting the Renaissance: Poland and the Low Countries in Early Modern Europe – The Culture of Self-Deception”, which was carried out by the British and Commonwealth Department of the University of Lodz in Poland and the Vakgroep Nederlandse Literatur en Alegemene Literatuuretenschap of the University of Ghent in Belgium (2009–2012). The goal of this project was to validate the ongoing debate on the Renaissance by looking at its significance in European civilization through the prism of marginalized cultures. As the essays presented in this volume demonstrate, the scope of our interest has grown over time so that issues such as literature, religion, diplomacy, politics, and arts are seen not only from Polish and Netherland perspectives. This book is a unique publication on the sixteenth-seventeenth European culture, politics and societal studies. Although the book is primarily addressed to scholars and academics who study the Renaissance / Early Modern episteme, it can also attract the attention of many other circles of readers interested in an interdisciplinary discourse devoted to e.g. governance, theology, religion, politics, diplomacy and literature. Since the essays focus on facts, processes, texts and state formations, which do not generally belong to the general discourse, they pose a challenge to the conventional perception of the period under discussion.
