Shaw titled the volume Plays Pleasant in order to contrast it with his first book of plays, Plays Unpleasant.

Arrowsmith tells the story of bright and scientifically minded Martin Arrowsmith of Elk Mills, Winnemac (the same fictional state in which several of Lewis's other novels are set), as he makes his way from a small town in the Midwest to the upper echelons of the scientific community at a prestigious foundation in New York City.

He is best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.   "As I Please" was a series of articles written between 1943 and 1947 for the British left-wing newspaper Tribune by author and journalist George Orwell. On resigning from his job at the BBC in November 1943, Orwell joined Tribune as literary editor. Over the next three-and-a-half years, he wrote a series of columns, under the title "As I Please", that remain some of the greatest examples of their genre in the English language.
