W budowaniu tożsamości młodych ludzi i określaniu przez nich celów życiowych ogromnie ważne jest poczucie zakorzenienia w przeszłości, czerpanie z niej tego, co wartościowe, a zarazem krytyczne podejście do historycznych grzechów, wypaczeń i zaniechań. Autorzy XXX tomu serii „Edukacja Nauczycielska Polonisty”, podejmując tematykę obecności historii najnowszej na lekcjach języka polskiego, nie piszą jedynie o kulturowych i literackich sposobach poznawania przeszłości dalszej i bliższej, lecz także – a może przede wszystkim – o zdobywaniu narzędzi rozumienia teraźniejszości.
