Pierwsze, anglojęzyczne wydanie publikacji ukazało się w 2007 roku nakładem wydawnictwa Free Press. Autor zastanawiał się, czy darwinowski proces ewolucji może stanowić wyjaśnienie dla powstania i rozwoju życia na Ziemi? Już w książce Czarna skrzynka Darwina uczony opowiedział się za poglądem, że podobieństwa w budowie morfologicznej i genetycznej organizmów wyraźnie przemawiają na rzecz idei wspólnoty pochodzenia. W tym sensie jest on ewolucjonistą, tyle że niedarwinowskim. W prezentowanej publikacji Behe podtrzymuje ten pogląd i podkreśla, że życie na Ziemi rozwijało się drogą powolnych przekształceń, a w procesie powstawania nowych gatunków kluczową rolę odgrywał darwinowski dobór naturalny. We współczesnej biologii ewolucyjnej funkcjonuje twierdzenie, że różnorodność form organicznych jest rezultatem działania przypadkowych mutacji i doboru naturalnego. Pogląd ten zwie się neodarwinizmem. Behe natomiast utrzymuje - i na tym polega jego odejście od darwinizmu - że wraz z rozwojem biochemii i genetyki stało się jasne, że różne formy życia i wiele struktur biologicznych nie mogły powstać drogą przypadkowych mutacji. Uczony argumentuje, że większość mutacji, które decydują o obecnym stanie przyrody ożywionej, nie miało charakteru losowego, jak przypuszczają darwiniści, ale było wynikiem inteligentnego projektu. Twierdzi on między innymi, że teoria ewolucji nie jest w stanie wyjaśnić pochodzenia względnie prostych struktur biologicznych, które wymagają niezależnego powstania więcej niż dwóch rodzajów białek. Zdaniem Behe'ego prawdopodobieństwo takiego wydarzenia jest zbyt małe na gruncie procesów przyrodniczych i dlatego wyjaśnienia przedstawiane przez biologów ewolucyjnych są mało wiarygodne. Amerykański biochemik twierdzi, że argumenty na rzecz teorii inteligentnego projektu można znaleźć nie tylko w biologii, ale także w chemii oraz kosmologii. Behe nawiązuje do mocniejszej interpretacji zasady antropicznej, zgodnie z którą warunki panujące we wszechświecie zostały celowo dostrojone, aby na Ziemi mogło zaistnieć złożone życie. Michael J. Behe jest jednym z głównych przedstawicieli teorii ID. Prezentowana książka zainteresuje z pewnością nie tylko krytyków darwinizmu, ale także zwolenników naturalistycznych idei powstania i rozwoju życia na Ziemi.
