Że też wszystkiego o Los Angeles muszę dowiadywać się z trzech źródeł: z amerykańskich seriali, od Chandlera i od Bukowskiego. I mam coraz mniejszą ochotę pojechać do Ameryki, zwłaszcza do Kalifornii. Na serialowe salony mnie nie wpuszczą, czasy Chandlera przeminęły i prywatny detektyw nie jest już postromantycznym samotnikiem, a detektywów od bandziorów trudno odróżnić. A Bukowski? Jaki z niego Amerykanin czy niechby tylko po matce Niemiec?! To jest zwykły Polak, który wzorem większości Polaków postanowił zrobić karierę w Ameryce. W dodatku był cwańszy od reszty i zrobił. Jacek Dąbała
Jego pomysły są tak niedorzeczne, że działają jak terapia. Derek Gudłaj, genialny wiejski debil, tak bardzo zakochał się w telewizji, że zaczyna naśladować wszystko, co tam zobaczy. W swojej wsi tworzy nową niewyobrażalnie absurdalną rzeczywistość. Trochę jak prorok epoki, w której media opętają ludzi jeszcze bardziej. Czytelnik kręci głową z niedowierzaniem i nagle zapomina o własnych problemach. Pozycja idealna dla osób poszukujących lekkich historii z okresu komunizmu pełnych absurdu oraz groteskowego humoru. Jacek Dąbała profesor zwyczajny, powieściopisarz, scenarzysta, były dziennikarz telewizyjny i radiowy. Kieruje Katedrą Warsztatu Medialnego i Aksjologii na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim. Jest autorem licznych artykułów i książek naukowych, w tym pogłębionych studiów z zakresu dramaturgii medialnej dla pisarzy, dziennikarzy i filmowców. Po ukończeniu szkoły filmowej w Łodzi napisał scenariusz do jednego z najbardziej znanych polskich filmów, Młode wilki (1995). Opublikował dziesięć powieści oraz jedną sztukę teatralną. Jest członkiem Polskiej Akademii Filmowej, Stowarzyszenia Pisarzy Polskich, Polskiej Akademii Nauk, Polskiego Stowarzyszenia Komunikacji Medycznej i Polskiego Stowarzyszenia Komunikacji.
Umberto Eco
Kraj groteskowy, zdeformowany, niepotrafiący nawet godnie przyjąć swojego tragicznego losu. Takie właśnie są Włochy opisywane przez Umberto Eco w jego najnowszej powieści i taka jest rzeczywistość, która zdaje się mówić autor wykroczyła już poza wszelkie granice wyobraźni. Jednak skoro prawda przewyższa literacką fikcję, to czy warto pisać taką powieść? Paradoksalnie, odpowiedź na to pytanie znajdziemy właśnie w tej książce (La Repubblica) Pan Colonna, główny bohater powieści, to typowy człowiek bez właściwości, a mówiąc dosadniej - życiowy nieudacznik.Pięćdziesiątka na karku i żadnych znaczących dokonań na koncie. Może jednak niespodziewana propozycja, jaką składa mu pewnego dnia 1992 roku niejaki Simei, zapoczątkuje tak długo oczekiwany przełom? Przez rok Colonna ma być świadkiem przygotowań do publikacji pierwszego numeru nowego dziennika, a potem opisać je w (rzecz jasna bestsellerowej) książce. Jego relacja nie musi ściśle trzymać się faktów, jako że ów dziennik, gotowy mówić prawdę o wszystkim, w gruncie rzeczy jest blefem, mają więc one drugorzędne znaczenie. Colonna, świetnie zdając sobie sprawę z oszustwa, decyduje się wziąć udział w eksperymencie i odegrać powierzoną mu rolę. Na początek poznaje barwną i dość przypadkowo dobraną grupę dziennikarzy przyszłej gazety. Jest wśród nich inteligentna trzydziestoletnia Maia Fresia (której wejście w życie Colonny ma nieoczekiwane i całkiem miłe konsekwencje), jest wyspecjalizowany w zadawaniu głupich pytań Cambria; powiązany z tajnymi służbami Lucidi; a także Braggadocio, wzorcowy dziennikarz śledczy, nieustannie tropiący rozmaite afery i spiski. Wszyscy oni dyskutują o zawartości nowej gazety: horoskopy powinny być optymistyczne, krzyżówki łatwe, nekrologi natchnione, sformułowania jasne i nie wymagające od czytelnika zbędnego namysłu. Jednak najistotniejsze jest, jak odwracać uwagę czytelnika od spraw, które dla mocodawców pisma są niewygodne, tudzież jak kierować uwagę czytelnika - tylko poprzez sugestie, nigdy wprost - na sprawy, które są niewygodne dla wrogów tychże mocodawców. Tymczasem niezmordowany Braggadocio dopracowuje szczegóły swojego odkrycia, jest bowiem przekonany, że udało mu się połączyćw logiczną całość najmroczniejsze tajemnice najnowszej historii Włoch: domniemania, że Mussolini przeżył, a zabity został jego sobowtór; zamach stanu planowany przez księcia Borghese; terror Czerwonych Brygad; przypuszczalne zabójstwo Jana Pawła I; afery banku watykańskiego. A wszystko to pod nieustanną kontrolą tajnej prawicowej organizacji Gladio, loży masońskiej P2, mafii, CIA, Watykanu i tajnych służb. Teza Braggadocia, choć solidnie skonstruowana, wydaje się wyssana z palca. Ale tyko do czasu W najnowszej powieści Umberta Eco odnajdujemy elementy political fiction, thrillera, romansu i gorzkiej groteski. Przede wszystkim jednak jest to niepokojąca wizja współczesnego świata kształtowanego przez media, które bynajmniej nie mogą uchodzić za wolne.
Francis Scott Fitzgerald
Arcydzieło literatury amerykańskiej. Tajemniczy i niewiarygodnie bogaty Jay Gatsby urządza w swoim luksusowym domu dekadenckie przyjęcia, choć rzadko się na nich pokazuje. Krążą o nim legendy, także o pochodzeniu jego fortuny. Pytań i plotek jest znacznie więcej na przykład dlaczego wpatruje się w blask okien po drugiej stronie zatoki. Fitzgerald opowiada ponadczasową historię o nierealnych pragnieniach i ludzkich przywarach, o miłości i wyrachowaniu, a także o złamanych przez życie, zdesperowanych i zagubionych młodych Amerykanach w okresie prosperity po pierwszej wojnie światowej. To także portret szaleństw lat dwudziestych, epoki, w której świat szemranych interesów miesza się ze światem bankierów, bieda z bajecznymi fortunami, amerykański sen z Wielkim kryzysem, a namiętne pragnienia zderzają z bolesnym upadkiem. Ten wielki Gatsby, uznany za jedną z najważniejszych powieści XX wieku, ukazuje się w nowym przekładzie Macieja Świerkockiego, dzięki któremu maestria Francisa Scotta Fitzgeralda wybrzmiewa w pełni.

W każdym z nas jest jakaś zadra, nieważne jak szerokim uśmiechem próbujemy ją maskować. Uporządkowane życie Seweryna Vorbla to fasada, choć on sam długo nie zdaje sobie z tego sprawy. Rutynowe dla pięćdziesięciolatka badania lekarskie uruchamiają w mężczyźnie refleksję na temat swojej kondycji - nie tylko fizycznej. Napięcia w relacji z rodzicami, niespełnienie zawodowe, samotność w małżeństwie, groteskowość relacji z kochanką - to tylko część obrazu życia Vorbla, bohatera tak zwykłego, że trudno się z nim nie utożsamić. Specyficzna mieszanka komedii i dramatu zachwyci miłośników "Dnia Świra" Marka Koterskiego.

Wells, is a character study analyzing the psychological sources of resistance to Wellsian ideology, and was influenced by Wellss acquaintance with Carl Gustav Jung and his ideas. Theodore Bulpington is a very ordinary man with a very vivid imagination. Ill at ease with himself, he sees a way to recreate his identity by adding layer upon layer of deception. This he does with such panache that eventually he becomes an impostor, a liar and a cheat. But with so many different masks to hold in place, his carefully woven deception soon spirals out of control and heads towards the chaos of mental torment. The novel is also of interest for its extended analysis of psychological responses to World War I.
