Edgar Wallace

One of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century, Edgar Wallace was an immensely popular author, who created exciting thrillers spiced with tales of treacherous crooks and hard-boiled detectives. In total Wallace is credited with over 170 novels, almost 1,000 short stories, and 18 stage plays. This comprehensive work presents a collection of nine short stories, primarily detective fiction of Edgar Wallace. These are largely adventure narratives with elements of crime or mystery, and usually combine a bombastic sensationalism with hammy violence. The stories are well written and definitely a product of their time and place.

E. Phillips Oppenheim

A novel written in 1912. These are good Victorian or Edward tales about representatives of the English upper class who are engaged in uncovering crimes, espionage, good deeds and shrouded by secrets. Some of these stories Oppenheim continued to develop in full novels. Others are short master classes with sketches, character and description. Unlike many of his stories, the ending for a couple of them is more acute or sad than usual.

Preston Muddock. For a time his detective stories were as popular as those of Arthur Conan Doyle. Between 1889 and 1922 he published nearly 300 detective and mystery stories. This varied collection includes material that gives readers a 19th century view of the world.

Four-Square Jane is not even a typical love story though there is a marriage in it. Often the women in this era detective novel start out strong but end up falling in love with someone and being controlled by some man.
