The stories, collected in 1905, are supposed to tell us about the every-day life of the soldiers and are supposed to be, in turns, funny, moving, or even sometimes tragic. This substantial collection of the Smithy stories finds our incorrigible hero and his scurrilous band of confederates malingering, scheming and conniving their way through life in the British Army during the First World War. Although this book like the earlier Smithy and The Hun was published during the First World War, the stories it contains, unlike the other book were all written and deal with events Pre-War.
E. Phillips Oppenheim

Nobodys Man starts out as a standard whodunit murder mystery then makes an abrupt lane-change into British politics of the mid-1920s. Brigadier general Andrew Tallente, late of Parliament, is implicated in the death of his male secretary, the son of a classmate at Eton. Seems the younger man may have not only been having an affair with the heros American wife, but had stolen incriminating political documents. A political coup of sorts develops as the opposing party invites Tallente to lead them. Enter the lovely heiress-next-door, who becomes the heros champion, and perhaps, new flame.

Na zbiórce personelu brakuje jednego mężczyzny. W jego kabinie Kirsten trafia na plik zdjęć. Kilka dni później odwiedza Martina Servaza w jego biurze w Tuluzie. U jej celu, w mrokach nocy, czeka na nich bezlitosny wróg, który zamierza zmienić ich życie w piekło. Od czasu wydania debiutanckiego Bielszego odcienia śmierci (Rebis 2012), nagrodzonego Prix Polar na festiwalu w Cognac za najlepszą francuską powieść 2011 roku i zekranizowanego w 2016, Bernard Minier święci sukcesy. Kolejnymi powieściami Kręgiem (REBIS 2013), Nie gaś światła (REBIS 2014) i Paskudną historią (REBIS 2015) wypracował sobie niekwestionowaną pozycję na scenie francuskiego kryminału. Jego powieści przetłumaczono do tej pory na czternaście języków.
Helena Sekuła
Alkor wychodzi z więzienia, nie czuje jednak euforii, bo nie dość, że musi podzielić się ukrytym łupem ze wspólnikami, których nie wydał, to jeszcze jego dziewczyna niespecjalnie się cieszy, że wrócił po siedmiu latach. Galeria wyrazistych postaci, barwny język, żywe dialogi, magiczna atmosfera. Dodatkowym atutem tej niezwykłej powieści jest fakt, że znaczna część jej akcji rozgrywa się w pięknych plenerach mazurskich jezior. Jej znakiem szczególnym jest to, że nie ma w niej milicyjnego czy policyjnego śledztwa – co jednak w żadnym stopniu nie burzy jej stricte kryminalnego charakteru. Liczy się w tej powieści szczegół, obserwacja, niuans i przede wszystkim język. We wszystkich tych aspektach Sekuła jest niezrównana. Język Sekuły jest zaiste rozpasany, nieokiełznany, nie zna żadnych granic. Tylko się w niego zanurzyć. Polecam gorąco.
