Written two years before Jane Eyre, The Professor was Charlotte Brontes first novel and was based on her experiences in Brussels. The story is one of love and doubt, as the hero, William Crimsworth, seeks his fortune as a teacher in Brussels and finds his love for the good Anglo-Swiss girl, Frances Henri, severely tested by the sensuously beguiling and manipulative headmistress, Zoroade Reuter. On the other hand, the social protest sounded distinctly in this novel that is typical for mature works of Charlotte Bronte. In particular, this protest is expressed in the image of a soulless, prudent businessman, the factory owner Edward Crimsworth who devoided of basic humanity in dealing with workers and their families.

No matter what happens, he keeps pushing forward and sticking with his principles.

A very very satisfying novel with a wonderfully ambiguous ending.

Teraz wraca do zdrowia po niebezpiecznym postrzale. Czuje się jedynie cieniem człowieka, którym był przedtem. Mimo to nie chce, żeby ktokolwiek z jego otoczenia dowiedział się, jak trudno mu się pozbierać emocjonalnie. Nie da się tego bynajmniej ukryć przed nową sąsiadką bystrą, seksowną Liną. Ta kieruje się w życiu żelazną zasadą nie przepada za dotykiem drugiego człowieka, o ile sama go nie zainicjuje, lecz z jakichś przyczyn dotyk Nasha działa na nią inaczej. On też to czuje. Każdy kontakt fizyczny między nimi rozpala płomień, który jemu daje poczucie spokoju i stabilności, a ją intryguje na tyle, by zbadać, czy pogłębienie tej bliskości jest warte ryzyka. Niestety, Lina ma własne tajemnice i jeśli Nash odkryje prawdziwy cel jej pobytu w miasteczku, może jej tego nigdy nie wybaczyć. Ponadto kobieta nie uznaje stałych związków. Gorący, przelotny romans z lokalnym stróżem prawa? Oczywiście. Ale związek z mężczyzną, który chciałby, żeby zapuściła korzenie? Na pewno nie!
