Powieść rozgrywa się w latach 60. lub 70. XIX wieku w rodzinnym mieście Lagerlöf w Värmland i dotyczy pewnego człowieka, który kocha swoją córkę ponad wszystko inne na świecie, ale kiedy ta przenosi się do Sztokholmu i nie ma od niej wieści, wpada w świat marzeń, w którym jest znanym cesarzem Portugalii. Całe jego życie jest zdominowane przez myśli o powrocie córki i tym, co się wtedy wydarzy. Mija 15 lat, zanim dziewczyna powraca do domu. Jest zszokowana szalonym klaunem, jakim stał się jej ojciec. Pewnego dnia zabiera ze sobą matkę, znów pozostawiając ojca, by udać się do Malmö i rozpocząć nowe życie. Jednak kiedy parowiec wyrusza w tę podróż, ojciec rzuca się w wodę, aby go zatrzymać... To jednak nie jest koniec tej wzruszającej opowieści. Zachęcamy do lektury!

The central character of the novel is a dog named Buck. The story opens at a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California, when Buck is stolen from his home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He becomes progressively more primitive and wild in the harsh environment, where he is forced to fight to survive and dominate other dogs. By the end, he sheds the veneer of civilization, and relies on primordial instinct and learned experience to emerge as a leader in the wild.
