Książka ta wyraża chęć zastosowania nowoczesnej metodologii oral history w praktyce, jest próbą odejścia od nurtu wpisującego rozmówcę w bezosobową grupę „świadków historii”, dotychczas marginalizowanych przez historiografię, oraz upatrującego w narratorze jedno z wielu źródeł wiedzy o przeszłości. W swoich rozważaniach na pierwszym miejscu stawiam narratora, którego traktuję jako twórcę narracji autobiograficznej. Interesuje mnie człowiek, który poprzez narrację szuka sensu własnego życia, odkrywa a nieraz buduje swoją własną tożsamość. W centrum mojej analizy zatem znalazły się zarówno proces powstawania narracji wraz nurtującymi badaczy dylematami, jak i treść zawarta w narracji oraz jej poetyka. Niniejsza praca ma też za zadanie zaprezentować rozważania metodologiczne związane z prowadzeniem badań oral history w środowiskach, dla których nie jest to nowe doświadczenie (tzn. narratorzy na ogół mają za sobą szereg doświadczeń tego typu). Zdecydowałam się zilustrować moje refleksje teoretyczne przykładami z własnych badań prowadzonych w środowisku kazachstańskich Polaków właśnie ze względu na olbrzymie doświadczenie opowiadania o własnej traumatycznej przeszłości przez jej przedstawicieli oraz o licznych dylematach tożsamościowych z niej wynikających. Odpamiętane. O historii mówionej na przykładzie narracji kazachstańskich Polaków o represjach na tle narodowościowym i religijnym to naukowe studium, którego zakres dyscyplinarny w ramach tradycyjnego podziału dyscyplin nie jest łatwy do zdefiniowania. Najprościej rzecz można byłoby określić jako memory studies – „studia nad pamięcią” (społeczną, zbiorową) – lub jeszcze szerzej, jako studium kulturoznawcze. Jest to bardzo wnikliwa i dobra warsztatowo praca, której jądrem jest, oral history – historia mówiona – potraktowana i analizowana jako perspektywa epistemologiczna i etyczna. Na pewno o wysokim naukowym poziomie książki świadczą formalne ramy rozważań autorki: zdecydowanie postawione (ambitne i zrealizowane) pytania badawcze, aparat naukowy w postaci wspomnianych źródeł i odwołań do szerokiej literatury naukowej z kilku dziedzin. Z recenzji dr hab. Marty Kurkowskiej-Budzan Ważna jest nie tylko znajomość literatury przedmiotu, lecz wnioski wypływające z jej analizy. Autorka słusznie decyduje się na użycie tzw. bricolage’u, czyli oderwania się od ścisłego poddania się dyktatom analitycznym jednej dyscypliny naukowej. Tylko w ten sposób może historyk odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jak przeszła rzeczywistość została zapamiętana i dlaczego w taki, a nie inny sposób świadek historii tworzy opowieść o swoim doświadczeniu.
