Na dobrą sprawę nie kwestionowano jej i nie problematyzowano, a jeśli już, to domagano się krwawej filozoficznej rewolucji, skutkującej, jak u Holbacha czy La Mettriego, radykalnym usunięciem całości dyskursu teologicznego poza obszar filozofii. Tym, co czyni Hume’a filozofem interesującym na tle standardowych oświeceniowych ateistów, jest zrozumienie - protonietzscheańskie w swoim charakterze - że odrzucenie Boga musi mieć konsekwencje epistemologiczne i ontologiczne. Jako filozof jest on świadomy czegoś, co nazwałem episteologią, czyli przekonaniem, że Bóg stanowi przede wszystkim najwyższą wartość epistemiczną, na której i wokół której zbudowane były fundamenty bez mała wszystkich klasycznych systemów filozoficznych nowożytnej Europy.
