Jako bardzo młody człowiek w czasie I wojny światowej był członkiem Polskiej Organizacji Wojskowej, następnie ochotniczo wstąpił do wojska, brał udział w wojnie polsko-bolszewickiej. Po ustaleniu granic II Rzeczpospolitej dobra rodzinne na Witebszczyźnie wraz z miejscowością, w której się urodził, pozostały w Związku Radzieckim. Zrzuciwszy mundur w 1922 roku związał się z chadeckim dziennikiem ,,Rzeczpospolita" o nastawieniu proendeckim i antypiłsudczykowskim, gdzie publikował felietony pod pseudonimem C. hr. Zan. Ostro i krytycznie oceniając porządki wprowadzone przez Piłsudskiego po przewrocie majowym 1926 roku, naraził się władzom sanacyjnym, w wyniku czego jesienią 1927 roku został porwany z ulicy Grójeckiej w Warszawie, wywieziony za miasto, ciężko pobity, wrzucony do dołu i zostawiony w lesie; ślad tego przeżycia odnaleźć można w jego powieści Znachor. Zapatrywania polityczne Dołęgi-Mostowicza nie zmieniły się w wyniku tego zdarzenia, natomiast zamiast dziennikarstwem zajął się pisaniem powieści (powstało ich w sumie 17), co przyniosło mu popularność i znaczny majątek. Zginął w czasie kampanii wrześniowej 1939 roku, jako podoficer wojska polskiego organizując obronę przed inwazją Związku Radzieckiego w granicznym miasteczku Kuty.
