Podkreśla także, że już od czasów zajęcia Krymu przez Rosję w 2014 roku zachodni obserwatorzy byli zdumieni błędną oceną sytuacji w Ukrainie przez rosyjskie kierownictwo. Takie same, a nawet większe błędy legły u podstaw decyzji Putina o zaatakowaniu Ukrainy w roku 2022. Podobnie błędnie oceniono determinację i spójność działań Zachodu w niesieniu pomocy zaatakowanemu krajowi. Wojna z Ukrainą stanowi wielką cezurę w stosunkach międzynarodowych - Władimir Putin wykluczył Rosję na długo z porządku międzynarodowego i prowadzi ją w niejasną i niepewną przyszłość. Zniszczył swoim postępowaniem próbę wspólnego budowania bezpieczeństwa, otwierając erę konfrontacji. Pytania o Europę i świat podczas wojny i po wojnie stanowią istotną część rozważań von Fritscha. Jednocześnie podkreśla potrzebę znalezienia przez wszystkie kraje unijne wspólnego punktu wyjścia dla zbudowania wspólnej polityki zagranicznej i polityki bezpieczeństwa. Analizuje skutki gospodarcze i polityczne wojny dla Rosji, Ukrainy, Europy i świata. Skłania się ku przekonaniu, że w najbliższych latach niewiele może się w Rosji zmienić. I próbuje zarysować sposób postępowania dla Zachodu: „Jak zatem postępować z taką Rosją i jej gotowym do agresji prezydentem? Wybrał drogę konfrontacji. Bezwarunkowe jest ogradzanie, containment – dodać trzeba: constrainment, odciąganie od dalszej ekspansji. Konieczna jest także próba zabezpieczania przed konfrontacją na drodze umów”. Postulat „konfrontacji uporządkowanej” z Rosją, czyli konieczność zawarcia porozumień międzynarodowych ograniczających zbrojenia i tworzących mechanizmy zapobiegające konfrontacji militarnej, jest jednym z ważniejszych przesłań książki.
