Further collection of 24 war-time short stories about Smithy, the soldier and his comrades Nobby and Spud in the British army before WWI. This is the second anthology in Wallaces Smithy series in which the famous character T. B. Smith makes his appearance. Also Smithys pal Nobby Clark has now emerged very much as the main character in these, usually humorous stories of pre world war one British army life. These stories are more clearly set in the Boer war. While the first Smithy volume was quite a test of patience, this volume at least has some well-done humor, mostly derived from the zany characterizations of the soldiers.

All three dream of a different life: Rosina wants to be an actress, Philip a poet, and Matthew hopes for a career in high finance. They all go off to London in the passionate quest for their dreams. This 1927 novel by Edward Phillips Oppenheim where problems arise in a family business. Oppenheim inherited a leather company from his father and ran it for 20 years before he became a full time author. The business of leather features in a number of his novels. He was acutely aware of class behavior and distinctions. An enjoyable read!

Alfred J. Church

Alfred John Church (1829-1912) was an English classical scholar. He was born in London and was educated at Kings College, London and Lincoln College, Oxford. From 1880 until 1888 he was professor of Latin at University College, London. While at University College in partnership with William Jackson Brodribb, he translated Tacitus and edited Plinys Letters. Church also wrote a number of stories in English re-telling of classical tales and legends for young people. He was a 19th century historian best known for his comprehensive histories on different periods of the Roman Empire, including this one. To the Lions is a challenging read. A good over view of history, recommended highly.

The Last Adventure is a story packed with intrigue, treachery, assassinations, and machinations, and it highlights Wallaces unmatched skill in setting a pulse-pounding pace. As the novel is rather short and quite fast-paced with a lot of scenery-changes and adventures, this nice. Edgar Wallace provides a thrill of another sort!

The Green Pack is a novel adapted from a successful play by the playwright Robert Curtis. Robert Curtis was the private secretary to British crime writer Edgar Wallace. Curtis and Wallace met for the first time in 1913, before parting following the outbreak of World War One, as Curtis had to do his military service. In 1916, he was discharged from the service after contracting malaria. In 1918 he was reunited with Wallace who employed him as his secretary, he had the task of copying out Wallaces dictations, this task he accomplished at such a speed that he was known as the fastest secretary in England. He accompanied Wallace on his travels, and was rarely from the side. After Wallaces death, he completed some of Wallaces unfinished manuscripts and turned several plays and film scripts into novels in the style of Wallace as well as writing several original novels.
