At the Mountains of Madness

H.P. Lovecraft

Lovecraft has proven that he is a master of descriptive writing that creates a sense of mystery, atmosphere, and dismay. On an expedition to Antarctica, Professor William Dyer and his colleagues discover the remains of ancient half-vegetable, half-animal life-forms. The extremely early date in the geological strata is surprising because of the highly-evolved features found in these previously unknown life-forms. Through a series of dark revelations, violent episodes, and misunderstandings, the group learns of Earths secret history and legacy. The authors vivid depictions of the landscape of these Polar Regions pull the reader into a nightmare realm and leave the reader with a disturbing sense of loneliness and anticipation of what the explorers will encounter next.

Charles Rex

Ethel M. Dell

A romance originally published in 1922 that holds up very well into the 21st century. Charles Rex is a sequel of The Hundredth Chance written by Ethel May Dell (1881-1939) who was a British writer of popular romance novels. Her stories are often full of passion and love and are set in India and other British colonial possessions. Not being a family man, Charles Rex travels widely and to some point aimlessly. On his last night in Italy, he rescues a small boy from a beating by his employer. What leads thereafter is an entanglement of duty, loyalty, love and honor bound marriages. This is a really fast moving, enjoyable romance with an interesting look at English society after the devastation of World War One.
