Literatkę -- sławną, podług jej własnej opinji -- nazywam Gwiazdą, gdyż na każdym kroku, w każdem przemówieniu, chciała uchodzić za ciało niebieskie, co światu przyświeca. Gwiazda przekonaną była, że w ciągu dni kilku pozna górali z ich historją, z obyczajami, językiem i poezją -- i to wszystko opisze na pożytek pokoleń. Miała też z sobą zapas różnokolorowego papieru, do wpisywania spostrzeżeń, domysłów i badań. Tylko natchnieniem -- siedząc w chacie -- myślała podzielić sławę i zasługę z Kolbergiem, Glogerem, Łepkowskim. Należał do grupy tzw. przedburzowców, pisarzy odrzucających romantyczną i mesjanistyczną retorykę zrywów narodowych, ale oczekujących przełomowej zmiany historycznej; większość z nich wzięło następnie udział w powstaniu styczniowym. Sam Bałucki nie walczył z bronią w ręku, ale działał w organizacjach spiskowych w Galicji i redagował wraz z Anczycem pismo "Kosynier"; aresztowany pod koniec 1863, spędził rok w więzieniu. Podobno tam poznał pewnego górala, którego los skłonił go do napisania popularnej pieśni Dla chleba (znanej jako pieśń ,,Góralu, czy ci nie żal" do muzyki Władysława Żeleńskiego). Debiutował utworami poetyckimi drukowanymi w prasie. W latach 60. Bałucki dołączył do grona pozytywistów, propagując w swych utworach bliskie im idee; był dowcipnym krytykiem stosunków społecznych w Galicji, szydził z mody na szlachetczyznę powszechnej wśród mieszczaństwa (m.in. w powieści Pan burmistrz z Pipidówki). Jako znakomity komediopisarz cieszył się wielką popularnością. U schyłku życia stał się obiektem ataków przedstawicieli Młodej Polski; toczył z nimi spór światopoglądowy na kartach swoich utworów, jednak szczególnie napastliwe recenzje Lucjana Rydla na łamach szacownego "Czasu" miały wpływ nie tylko na stan psychiczny, ale również na sytuację materialną. Ostatecznie bojkot przeprowadzili nawet aktorzy podczas premiery jednej z jego sztuk. Bałucki popełnił samobójstwo strzałem z rewolweru na krakowskich Błoniach; został pochowany na Cmentarzu Rakowickim.
