Po tym skandalu zmuszony był potajemnie opuścić rodzinne strony i wyjechał do Lipska (gdzie z lekarza wojskowego awansował na wykładowcę filozofii i historii), Drezna, a następnie Weimaru. Drugi z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych utworów Schillera, Oda do radości, powstała w 1786 r. Skomponowana do jej słów przez Beethovena kantata stanowi finał jego IX symfonii, a dziś także hymn Unii Europejskiej. Z powodu treści Zbójców Schiller został uhonorowany obywatelstwem przez rewolucyjną Francję, jednak trudno uznać go za entuzjastę Wielkiej Rewolucji, dostrzegał bowiem dwuznaczność moralną wszelkich prób przywracania sprawiedliwości w sposób gwałtowny.
