Doch im Tosen des Unwetters verirren sie sich heillos und angesichts des nahen Todes beginnen die Standesunterschiede zwischen den beiden ungleichen Gefährten auf wundersame Weise zu verschwinden. Tolstoi erzählt hier in meisterlichem Realismus von der Wandlung eines Menschen.
