Gdy pojawia się potrzeba wykonania prognozy, istnieją sytuacje, kiedy opieramy się jedynie na szeregach czasowych, ponieważ albo brakuje czasu na poszukiwanie zewnętrznych czynników wpływających na dane zjawisko, albo takowych nie da się wskazać w jednoznaczny sposób.   W konfrontacji z narzędziami o bardziej skomplikowanej konstrukcji (na przykład jedno- i wielorównaniowymi modelami ekonometrycznymi) takie postępowanie wydaje się zbyt uproszczone, żeby nie powiedzieć „trywialne”. Praktyka jednak pokazuje, że metoda prostsza nie oznacza automatycznie metody gorszej.
