Otchłań ciągnie

Otto Stemin

Powieść kryminalna, która ukazuje walkę wrogich wywiadów przemysłowych o pewien niezwykle cenny wynalazek. Sposób budowania napięcia nadaje powieści cechy thrillera, a wartka akcja i nieprzewidywalność fabuły czyni powieść aspirującą do gatunku sensacyjnego.

The Confidence-Man. His Masquerade

Herman Melville

A post-modern masterpiece; a century ahead of its time. The novel portrays a Canterbury Tales-style group of steamboat passengers whose interlocking stories are told as they travel down the Mississippi River toward New Orleans. The novel is written as cultural satire, allegory, and metaphysical treatise, dealing with themes of sincerity, identity, morality, religiosity, economic materialism, irony, and cynicism. And the novel itself tests the confidence of the reader as each character slides away beneath the muddy prose waters of the river. Melville introduces characters who change identities so rapidly that the reader is confronted with a portrait of the American frontier as perceived through a series of disguises.

Cleek. The Master Detective

Thomas W. Hanshew

Collection of several short mysteries, starring consulting detective Hamilton Cleek and his incredible skills at disguise with the assistance of his cockney assistant Dollops. Told as a fairly continuous narrative, held together by the underlying thread of Cleeks efforts to redeem himself and thus gain the affection of the woman with whom he has fallen in love. There is also another underlying thread concerning Cleeks erstwhile accomplice, Margot, and her present accomplice, Merode, as Cleek occasionally finds himself foiling their plans. Each one of these stories is a romp, some more successful than others.

Mansfield Park

Jane Austen

A young girl named Fanny Price comes to live with her wealthy uncle and aunt, Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram. Fannys family is quite poor; her mother, unlike her sister Lady Bertram, married beneath her, and Fannys father, a sailor, is disabled and drinks heavily. Fanny is abused by her other aunt, Mrs. Norris, a busybody who runs things at Mansfield Park, the Bertrams estate. The Bertram daughters, Maria and Julia, are shallow, rather cruel girls, intent on marrying well and being fashionable. The elder son, Tom, is a roustabout and a drunk. Fanny finds solace only in the friendship of the younger son, Edmund, who is planning to be a clergyman. Fanny grows up shy and deferential, caught as she typically is between members of the Bertram family.
