La notion de minorité est centrale dans la réflexion contenue dans ce volume. Elle est à comprendre très largement, dans le sens d’une collectivité particulière (nationale, ethnique, religieuse, parlementaire, sexuelle, d’opinion), considérée dans son rapport avec le groupe dominant. La présente étude réunit les représentants de plusieurs domaines : sociologie, histoire, politologie, sciences du langage, études littéraires. Grâce à cette richesse d’approches, la minorité apparaît sous plusieurs formes. Loin de considérer la relation majorité/minorité dans le seul contexte de l’oppresseur – oppressé, certaines études ont tablé sur le rapport de coexistence plutôt que d’exclusion. Le volume est à la fois hétéroclite et uni, par l’analyse pertinente que les chercheurs proposent du problème de la minorité, vue sous plusieurs formes et aspects, ce qui permet d’espérer qu’il arrivera à un large éventail de lecteurs. Il serait souhaitable que ces études sur les questions identitaires contribuent, un tant soit peu, à apprivoiser la réalité pas toujours facile à comprendre et, par conséquent, à la rendre meilleure. Car, comme nos auteurs semblent en convenir, on pourrait dire, avec Shimon Peres, que « la majorité appartient au passé et la minorité à l’avenir ».
