Awesta (Avesta), natchniona księga zaratusztrianizmu, została zredagowana w bardzo starożytnym języku zwanym awestyjskim, a zawiera przekazy przez niektórych datowane na niezwykle zamierzchłą przeszłość, bo aż na II tysiąclecie przed naszą erą. Tekst Awesty prawdopodobnie został ostatecznie zredagowany w VI wieku p.n.e., ale gdy Aleksander Wielki podbił imperium perskie, nakazał tę świętą księgę zniszczyć. Została ona odtwarzana przez bardzo długi czas, by ostateczną redakcję uzyskać dopiero za panowania szacha Szapura II (309-379) z dynastii Sasanidów. Istniejąca obecnie Awesta składa się z dwudziestu jeden ksiąg (nasków) i dzieli się na kilka części. Oferowana księga zawiera całość świętego tekstu: Wendidad, Sîrôzahy, Yasty, Nyâyisy, Yasna, Visparad, Âfrînagân, Gâhs i pozostałe fragmenty.
