Beyond The City. The Idyll of a Suburb

Arthur Conan Doyle

Beyond the City explores the relationships between the residents of three adjoining homes. The cast of characters includes a widowed doctor with two daughters, a retired admiral with a wife and son, and a feminist living with her nephew. Destiny brings these three peculiar households together in the placid English countryside. The desire for money and romance drive these Victorians beyond the natural boundaries of their middle-class lives. As the web of lust and deceit draws these accidental neighbors ever closer, a financial scandal befalls one of them. An outside rank pirate is linked somehow to one of the neighbors. Who could it be? In this work, Conan Doyle exhibits the practiced subtlety and complexity for which he has become so well known.

The Count of the Saxon Shore

Alfred J. Church

So little is known from history about the last years of the Roman occupation that the writer of fiction has almost a free hand. In this story a novel, but, it is hoped, not an improbable, view is taken in an important event the withdrawal of the legions. This is commonly assigned to the year 410, when the Emperor Honorius formally withdrew the Imperial protection from Britain. But the usurper Constantine had actually removed the British army two years before; and, as he was busied with the conquest of Gaul and Spain for a considerable time after, it is not likely that they were ever sent back. Mr. Church is a most excellent writer, keeps the novel moving, the excitement on edge and the heroes and heroin coming alive on page after page after page consequently.

Szymon Winrych glówny bohater Rozdzióbią nas kruki, wrony to powstaniec styczniowy, który choć zdaje sobie sprawę z tego, że powstanie dogorywa, nie poddaje się i walczy do upadłego. Uparcie dąży do celu.

Gunmans Gold

Max Brand

An exciting Western tale of a honorable thief who steals from crooks and ends up saving a family from the ruthless and conniving hands of a cousin who is trying to insert himself into their fortunes. Theres lots of action with good characterizations and even some political and philosophical insights that gives the story a depth of being more than just an action yarn. Theres a hired investigator, who saves him repeatedly, at risk to himself, and there is a lovely girl who eventually sees through an ugly face to a heart of gold. Highly recommended, especially for those who love the Old Western genre.
