Richard Kilvington\'s Quaestiones super libros Physicorum. A Critical Edition with an Introduction

In the late Middle Ages, natural philosophy focused primarily on the analysis of Aristotle's works, along with Averroes' commentaries. Among other works, Aristotle's Physics was taught at universities, and commentaries on it were the result of such classes. The present book is the result of the lectures of Richard Kilvington (ca. 1302-1361), one of the founders of the so-called School of Oxford Calculators, English scholars active in the mid-14th century. The volume contains a critical edition of Richard Kilvington's Questions on the Physics from Latin manuscripts, provided with footnotes referring to the sources used by Kilvington, as well as to the works of his contemporaries. The edition is preceded by an introduction presenting the arguments for the reconstruction of this commentary and the history of the manuscripts containing Kilvington's questions. This extensive commentary, which the author reconstructed on the basis of manuscript evidence, consists of eight so-called disputed questions. Kilvington discusses almost all the topics covered by Aristotle in his works on natural philosophy and the theory of knowledge, and logical considerations also occupy a considerable space. Kilvington is mainly interested in issues related to: the formation of complex material bodies, which occurs primarily in the process of mixing, the problem of describing the rules of local motion, and the conditions that determine such motion, i.e. the concepts of time, space, and vacuum. Kilvington's commentary is an original, sometimes innovative interpretation of the theories of Aristotle and Averroes. It was quoted many times and was an inspiration for contemporary and later thinkers. The research achievements of these thinkers contributed to the development of modern natural philosophy.

An sich hat kein Er­eig­nis Grö­ße, und wenn schon gan­ze Stern­bil­der ver­schwin­den, Völ­ker zu­grun­de ge­hen, aus­ge­dehn­te Staa­ten ge­grün­det und Krie­ge mit un­ge­heu­ren Kräf­ten und Ver­lus­ten ge­führt wer­den: über vie­les der Art bläst der Hauch der Ge­schich­te hin­weg, als han­de­le es sich um Flo­cken. Es kommt aber auch vor, dass ein ge­wal­ti­ger Mensch einen Streich führt, der an ei­nem har­ten Ge­stein wir­kungs­los nie­der­sinkt; ein kur­z­er schar­fer Wi­der­hall, und al­les ist vor­bei. Die Ge­schich­te weiß auch von sol­chen gleich­sam ab­ge­stumpf­ten Er­eig­nis­sen bei­na­he nichts zu mel­den. So über­schleicht einen je­den, wel­cher ein Er­eig­nis her­an­kom­men sieht, die Sor­ge, ob die, wel­che es er­le­ben, sei­ner wür­dig sein wer­den. Auf die­ses Sich-Ent­spre­chen von Tat und Emp­fäng­lich­keit rech­net und zielt man im­mer, wenn man han­delt, im Kleins­ten wie im Größ­ten; und der, wel­cher ge­ben will, muss zu­se­hen, dass er die Neh­mer fin­det, die dem Sin­ne sei­ner Ga­be ge­nug­tun. Filozof, filolog klasyczny, pisarz. W latach szkolnych z zamiłowaniem oddawał się poznawaniu niemieckiej muzyki klasycznej od Bacha i Mozarta po Beethovena oraz poezji romantycznej (szczególnie wielkie wrażenie zrobiły na nim utwory nowo odkrytego Hölderlina). Studiował filologię klasyczną, teologię, historię Kościoła i historię na uniwersytecie w Bonn (1864-1865) i w Lipsku (od 1865). Jako filolog klasyczny zyskał wielkie uznanie, wśród jego pierwszych publikacji znalazły się m. in. komentarze do Arystotelesa; w 1869 roku został profesorem nadzwyczajnym w katedrze filologii klasycznej uniwersytetu w Bazylei. Początkowa popularność w środowisku uczelni przygasła po krytycznym przyjęciu koncepcji dionizyjskości i apollińskości wyłożonej w Narodzinach tragedii (1872). Jeszcze przed podjęciem pracy akademickiej Nietzsche odbył obowiązkową służbę wojskową. Wkrótce potem wymówił obywatelstwo pruskie i od 1869 roku pozostawał ?bezpaństwowcem?. Bardzo istotny wpływ na myśl Nietzschego miało zetknięcie się z filozofią Artura Schopenhauera oraz muzyką Ryszarda Wagnera, z którym blisko przyjaźnił się na początku lat 70 XIX wieku (później doszło do rozluźnienia stosunków ze względów światopoglądowych; komentarzem do istoty tego rozdźwięku jest napisana przez filozofa w 1888 r. rozprawa Nietzsche kontra Wagner). Charakterystyczne w stylu pisarskim Nietzschego jest pisanie aforyzmami (począwszy do dzieła Ludzkie, arcyludzkie z 1878 r.). Po części wynikało to z choroby, na którą cierpiał od lat młodzieńczych, a która objawiała się niezwykle silnymi, wielodniowymi atakami migreny, po części jednak był to świadomy wybór formy literackiej: ?Kto krwią i w przypowieściach pisze, nie chce, by go czytano, żąda, by się go na pamięć uczono? - pisał w najbardziej znanym ze swych tekstów, Tako rzecze Zaratustra (1883-1885). Choroba zmusiła go do zrezygnowania z pracy uniwersyteckiej w 1879 roku. Od tego czasu wiele podróżował, po Włoszech, Niemczech i Szwajcarii, gdzie przebywał najchętniej. Na przełomie 1888 i 1889 roku nasilenie choroby doprowadziło do obłędu; Nietzsche trafił na rok do kliniki psychiatrycznej, najpierw w Bazylei, a następnie w Jenie. W 1890 matka zabrała go w rodzinne strony, do Naumburga; ostatnie trzy lata życia spędził samotnie w Weimarze. Został pochowany w Röcken, obok swego ojca, pastora luterańskiego. Ostatnim dziełem Nietzschego jest autobiograficzna książka Ecce Homo (1888); pośmiertnie została wydana jeszcze z notatek Wola mocy.   Kupując książkę wspierasz fundację Nowoczesna Polska, która propaguje ideę wolnej kultury.
