Nie skupia się na wielkich wydarzeniach z życia warszawskiej elity, lecz na warunkach życia, mieszkalnictwie, sporcie i kulturze robotniczej. Jest to opowieść o barakach dla bezdomnych, kamienicach czynszowych, o Warszawskiej Spółdzielni Mieszkaniowej, o Warszawie chrześcijańskiej i żydowskiej, o czasach kryzysu i czasach stabilizacji. To opowieść o strajkach, policyjnych pałkach, a także o polityce robionej nie tylko za pomocą ulotek, lecz również kastetów i rewolwerów. Najbardziej wciągające dla wielu okażą się zapewne fragmenty dotyczące bojówek kierowanych przez Doktora Łokietka i Tatę Tasiemkę. Pełniły one rolę milicji partyjnych, jednocześnie działały jako gangi wymuszające haracze i kontrolujące największe targowisko międzywojennej stolicy na placu Kercelego, zwanym Kercelakiem. Nie zabraknie również wątku związków zawodowych (szczególną uwagę zwracają fragmenty o tramwajarzach, pokazujące jak prężne były to wówczas organizacje) i partii politycznych odwołujących się w swoich programach do robotników. Jedną z osi narracji jest tu tocząca się przez całe dwudziestolecie międzywojenne rywalizacja między socjalistami (głównie PPS) a komunistami (KPRP, później KPP). Podczas demonstracji, zwłaszcza pierwszomajowych, dochodziło miedzy nimi do regularnych starć, również z użyciem broni palnej. Padali zabici i ranni, a policja interweniowała wybiórczo.
