Bohaterowie utworu Ziemia obiecana to trzej młodzi przyjaciele: Karol Borowiecki (Polak, syn szlachcica, inżynier w fabryce), Maks Baum (Niemiec, syn fabrykanta) i Moryc Welt (Żyd, pośrednik) mieszkają w kamienicy Teodora Steigerta przy ulicy Piotrkowskiej 90. Znają się z czasów szkolnych, razem studiowali w Rydze. Ich celem jest zrobienie kariery i zdobycie milionów. Pewnego wieczoru Karol odnawia romans z piękną żoną bogatego fabrykanta, Lucy Zuckerową. Wyciąga od niej tajemnice depeszy, która zbulwersowała potentatów łódzkiego przemysłu: wkrótce mają zostać podniesione cła na bawełnę. Trzej przyjaciele łączą swe kapitały. Moryc wyjeżdża do Hamburga, by kupić jak największy transport surowca. Gdy go sprzedadzą, będą mieli kapitał zakładowy na budowę fabryki. Różnice pochodzenia i obyczajów nie dzielą przyjaciół, wręcz przeciwnie wykorzystują je do skutecznego działania i najczęściej wygrywają z konkurencją. Są typowymi Lodzermensch. Wkrótce twarda walka o kapitał sprawi, że będą się musieli wyrzec swych młodzieńczych ideałów.

Some critics have ranked this novella among Dostoyevskys best works because of its style and structure. Alfred Bem has called it one of the most complete works by Dostoyevsky in regards to its composition and development.
