Niniejszy przegląd encyklopedyczny, liczący blisko 900 haseł, ma na celu przypomnienie i zdefiniowanie pojęć z dziedziny mitologii i religii Czarnej Afryki, które już weszły do obiegu czytelniczego w Polsce. Większość z nich trudno by było jednak znaleźć w istniejących encyklopediach i leksykonach. Jego trzon stanowią hasła i artykuły hasłowe z zakresu etnicznych wierzeń rodzimych, ciągle jeszcze ważnego składnika życia religijnego tej części świata. Słownik nie zawiera wprawdzie podstawowych haseł z zakresu chrześcijaństwa i islamu - choć religie te odrywają ogromną rolę w Afryce, ale dużą wagę przywiązuje do różnych kultów synkretycznych, nowych ruchów religijnych i afrochrześcijańskich Kościołów oraz do zjawiska klasyfikowanego jako "czarny islam".
