Autorka powieści „Pozycja słońca” jest córką Finki i Egipcjanina. Jako dziecko mieszkała z rodzicami w Indiach, Libii, Arabii Saudyjskiej i Egipcie. W 1987 roku, mając 13 lat, przeniosła się z matką do Finlandii. Ukończyła studia na uniwersytecie w Helsinkach; przygotowuje doktorat z historii nauk społecznych. Książka opowiada historię miłości dwojga ludzi pochodzących ze skrajnie odmiennych kultur, widzianą oczami ich córki. Przedstawia jej życie między dwiema kulturami i próbę odnalezienia własnej tożsamości, innej niż silne indywidualności rodziców. Pochodzili oni z tak różnych światów, że nie mieli szans na przetrwanie we wspólnym związku. Konkretnym, a jednocześnie wieloznacznym symbolem różnic kulturowych, między którymi żyje dorastająca dziewczyna, jest sposób obierania pomarańczy:  inny w Egipcie i inny w Finlandii. Powieść ma formę poetyckiej, pełnej barw, zapachów oraz dźwięków mozaiki. Na każdym kroku pojawiają się kontrasty i sprzeczności: blask złotych ozdób i biel szpitalnego pokoju, żar pustynnego słońca i chłodna woda jeziora, gorąca miłość i strach przed najbliższym człowiekiem. Autorka umiejętnie i naturalnie wiąże przeszłość i teraźniejszość; w zapamiętane ze swojego dzieciństwa oraz okresu dojrzewania reakcje i odczucia wplata poszczególne fazy rodzenia się i umierania miłości rodziców. Powieść została niezwykle ciepło przyjęta w Finlandii, gdzie otrzymała kilka prestiżowych nagród literackich. Zaraz po wydaniu w 2002 r. przetłumaczono  ją na język szwedzki i niemiecki, w przygotowaniu są przekłady na inne języki europejskie.
