Nie ulega wątpliwości. że jeszcze w XVII i XVIII wieku obecność pierwiastków teologicznych była w filozofii czymś zrozumiałym i niekontrowersyjnym. Na dobrą sprawę nie kwestionowano jej i nie problematyzowano, a jeśli już, to domagano się krwawej filozoficznej rewolucji, skutkującej, jak u Holbacha czy La Mettriego, radykalnym usunięciem całości dyskursu teologicznego poza obszar filozofii. Tym, co czyni Hume’a filozofem interesującym na tle standardowych oświeceniowych ateistów, jest zrozumienie - protonietzscheańskie w swoim charakterze - że odrzucenie Boga musi mieć konsekwencje epistemologiczne i ontologiczne. Jako filozof jest on świadomy czegoś, co nazwałem episteologią, czyli przekonaniem, że Bóg stanowi przede wszystkim najwyższą wartość epistemiczną, na której i wokół której zbudowane były fundamenty bez mała wszystkich klasycznych systemów filozoficznych nowożytnej Europy. Czym jest w tym kontekście wartość? Gwarantem sensowności podstawowych epistemologicznych i ontologicznych pojęć filozoficznych: prawdy, korespondencji, uzasadnienia, bytu, celu itd. Dzięki niej koncepcje filozoficzne stają się spójnymi, jednorodnymi systemami. Humowska krytyka siedemnastowiecznej filozofii to potwierdza. Jeśli bowiem, jak proponuje Hume, usuniemy z filozofii pojęcie Boga, to spójna dotychczas wizja świata ulegnie zburzeniu, a postrzeganie rzeczywistości straci przyrodzoną - jak sądzili Descartes i Leibniz - jasność i wyraźność.
