Rzadko się zdarza, aby polski czytelnik mógł przeczytać książkę, dla której inspiracją są przestrzenie - również te historyczne i wyobrażeniowe - Kotliny Panońskiej, chorwackiej Slawonii. W prozie tej spotykają się dwa sposoby myślenia - intelektualny i codzienny. Andrić stworzył narratora - znakomitego gawędziarza - w którym zderzają się głosy wiejskiego dziecka i erudyty, głosy "wtedy" i głosy "teraz". Czytelnik odbiera tę dwoistość jako zaproszenie do literackiej gry, z której wyłania się obraz dzieciństwa, wspaniały i pociągający, ale wcale niewyidealizowany, co najwyżej zabarwiony lekką nutą nostalgii. Autor przyznaje, że jednym z najważniejszych dla niego literackich wzorców (obok Danilo Kisa) jest polski pisarz o żydowskich korzeniach, Bruno Schulz. Może Andrić jest mniej liryczny niż Schulz, ale nie mniej magiczny. Ten powiew przeszłości jest wszechobecny i urzeczenie nią staje się obsesją narratora. Ta żywa obecność starożytnych tradycji i warstw kulturowych stanowi doskonały kontrapunkt dla codziennego życia na wsi, które jest w istocie ahistoryczne. Chorwacki krajobraz stereotypowo postrzegamy z perspektyw wybrzeża Adriatyku i Gór Dynarskich. Większość tłumaczeń pisarzy chorwackich na język polski utrwala tę ideę. Dlatego "Simurg" może wzbogacić mozaikę chorwackich tradycji, z którymi zapoznaje się polski czytelnik.
