Otrzymała doktorat honoris causa Uniwersytetu w Uppsali (1907) oraz Uniwersytetu Christiana Albrechta w Kiel w Niemczech (1932). Pierwsza z tych nagród pozwoliła jej odkupić rodzinną posiadłość z pałacem w M?rbacka, który musiał być sprzedany w 1887 r. W 1925 roku została odznaczona złotym medalem króla Szwecji, Illis Quorum Medal, przyznawanym za wybitne prace w zakresie sztuki i kultury. Odbyła podróże do Włoch (1895-1896), do Egiptu i Palestyny (1899-1900) oraz do Finlandii i Rosji (1912). Jej życiową partnerką była poznana w 1894 r. Sophie Elkan (jej dedykowana jest powieść Jeruzalem z 1901 r.), miłosne relacje łączyły ją również z Valborg Olander, wykładowczynią w kolegium nauczycielskim w Falun, gdzie Lagerlöf zamieszkała w 1897 roku. Oprócz beletrystyki do ważnych dokumentów należą pozostałe po pisarce dzienniki (Dagbok för Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf) i korespondencja.
