Tytuł nadany przez Dantego – Comedia – (określenie Divina pochodzi od Boccaccia) – i mający swoje uzasadnienie w świetle średniowiecznych poetyk, nie wyklucza obecności w nim elementów tragicznych. Istotnie Boska Komedia zawiera szereg epizodów, zogniskowanych wokół „wielkich” potępionych z Piekła, które tworzą swoiste mikrostruktury tragiczne ze względu na sposób ukształtowania owych postaci, „odgrywających” swoje dramaty przed Dantem-pielgrzymem. Analogie pomiędzy nimi a bohaterami greckich tragedii dochodzą do głosu na poziomie świata wartości, rodzajów konfliktów, koncepcji winy i pewnych elementów narracji owych postaci czy epizodów, których są protagonistami, jak również ich nacechowania stylistyczno-językowego. Jednak dyskurs Dantego-autora, wywierający istotny wpływ zarówno na ową rzeczywistość, jak i na sposób, w jaki dochodzi ona do głosu w wypowiedziach poszczególnych postaci, dokonuje stopniowego demontażu tego, co tragiczne, znajdując dlań rozwiązanie w makrostrukturze „komicznej” dzieła.
