Zgodnie z przyjętymi założeniami badawczymi kluczem do poznania owej idei imperialnej stają się ikonografia i legendy namonetne. Te środki przekazu informacji, samodzielnie albo łącznie, dostarczają do analizy rozmaitych odsłon tytułowego zagadnienia w jego oficjalnej interpretacji. Składają się na nie następujące wątki: granice i budowa świata rzymskiego, struktura świata barbarzyńskiego, relacje Imperium – sąsiedzi, a porządkuje je umieszczenie ich w pryzmacie działań i roszczeń cesarza rzymskiego. Temat władztwa nad światem – kategorii bądź symbolicznej, bądź praktycznej – odczytywany jest w jego podstawowym, czyli przestrzennym, sensie.
