Perkins of Portland. Perkins the Great
Ellis Parker Butler
Ellis Parker Butler (1869-1937) was a contemporary of many big names in American fiction straddling the 19th and 20th centuries, but today hes almost completely forgotten. Butler, the author of more than 30 books and more than 2,000 stories and essays. His writing spanned more than forty years and his stories, poems and articles were published in more than 225 magazines. Perkins of Portland are amusing tales showing the effectiveness of advertising some rather questionable products. Perkins and the narrator partner in promotions directed at a gullible and willing public. Unlike most tales of the kind, with moralistic endings where the sharps come to grief, Perkins and Co. become wealthy and quite pleased with themselves.
Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc
Mark Twain
The name of Joan of Arc became a legend: an illiterate village girl, standing at the head of the French army, delivered her country from English rule and enthroned the king, who later betrayed her. In the novel by Mark Twain, the story of Jeanne her childhood, her victories and death is presented to the reader on behalf of her friend and secretary. This is a story about a great and noble soul, about a disinterested female heart that can withstand any load, even beyond the strength of the mighty of this world.
Jane Austen
Persuasion is the last novel fully completed by Jane Austen. The story begins seven years after the broken engagement of Anne Elliot to then Commander Frederick Wentworth. Now circumstances have conspired to bring him back into her social circle and Anne finds her old feelings for him reignited. However, when they meet again Wentworth behaves as if they are strangers and seems more interested in her friend Louisa.
Jane Austen
Max Brand, Max Brand
This collection includes three short novels from one of the top three Western novelists of all time Max Brand (Frederick Faust). The stories here are character studies of outlaws, the lives they lead and the lies and myths that spring up about them. The title novel, Peter Blue, is an excellent character study. Blue, wounded in a gunfight, has lost the use of his gun hand and is desperately trying to learn to shoot with his left hand before his enemies realize how vulnerable he is. In the meantime, being hold up in one place, he, too, learns the values of a normal, fulfilling life until one of the gunmen he beat in the past comes to even the score. Now, Blue, with so much more to live for, is unable to defend himself. Or is he?
