The V4 Towards Migration Challenges in Europe. An Analysis and Recommendations

The culmination of the large-scale influx of migrants in the European area in 2015 and 2016 has not only led to severe pressure on the affected countries - transit countries as well as countries of destination - but also to the questioning of fundamental achievements of the European Union such as the freedom of movement. The migrant crisis also shed light on pressing issues still in need of satisfying responses reflecting reality, such as the case of the revision of the 1951 Geneva Convention on the status of refugees and the Dublin Ili Regulation setting forth that an asylum application needs to be filed in the first country of entry. Not only did the crisis reveal already existing ruptures between Western and Eastern Europe, but it also showed that the European Union as such is incapable of taking firm and swift decisions regarding the protection of its own borders and citizens against an unprecedented influx of irregular migrants - many of them without official documents. Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia are all sceptical towards the idea of positivist humanitarian approach towards migrations and introducing limits on accepting refugees for each EU state. Such reluctance derives from many different aspects, from political and geopolitical to social and cultural. Does V4 region is in fact threatened by migration crisis? lt is evident, that Hungary being the transit state can face significant threats. However, none of those states have the status of settlement countries or long-standing destinations.

The Victorian Royal Nursery attempts to shed more light on the nursery for the children of Queen Victoria. It examines the creation, organisation, and financing of the nursery, with a consideration of the most important individuals who looked after the Royal children, namely the medical staff, wet nurses, monthly nurses, permanent nurses, governesses and subgovernesses. The study is based mostly on the numerous unpublished documents from the Royal Archives at Windsor as well as the hitherto little-known or unknown sources like the journal of the royal accoucheur Dr Robert Ferguson or the diary of head-nurse Mrs Ann Thurston. The Warsaw Group Rytm (1922-32) and Modernist Classicism

The Woman Artist: Essays in memory of Dorota Filipczak

The volume, honoring Professor Dorota Filipczak, whose energetic and fruitful academic career was cut short in 2021, offers a contribution to literary criticism and culture studies, the areas on which her own scholarly endeavors centered. The theme of "the woman artist" was of particular significance both for Filipczak's inquiry into the work of writers such as Alice Munro, Jane Urquhart, Michele Roberts or Margaret Laurence, and for her own poetic practice. Rather than focus on her achievements in various fields (as scholar, writer, teacher, poet, and translator), the texts collected in this volume go beyond remembrance and the honoring of an established scholar's remarkable feats. Despite their undeniable commemorative role, the chapters are an attempt to carry Dorota Filipczak's academic endeavors forward, into the future, with her own texts serving as prologue and inspiration. The contributors to the volume - representing various fields of the academia - are her friends, colleagues and collaborators, and the essays eloquently testify to her intellectual influence. From more personal reflections and ruminations inspired by Filipczak's life and work to articles exploring the work of a range of women artists, the volume offers an investigation of various approaches to autobiography, tensions between public personas and private selves, subversive performative personas, transcending religious frameworks of bodily discipline, as well as "toggling" between the human and the nonhuman.

Książka stanowi próbę poszerzenia metodologii badań nad reklamami prasowymi poprzez wypracowanie nowych modeli analizy tego szczególnego typu obrazowo-tekstowego artefaktu oraz wykazanie ich zasadności i przydatności w oparciu o obszerny korpus przykładów zaczerpnięty z prasy polskiej, brytyjskiej i chińskiej. Praca podzielona jest na trzy rozdziały, z których pierwszy stanowi wprowadzenie teoretyczne oraz przegląd badań nad dyskursem reklamowym, natomiast dwa następne najpierw omawiają i poszerzają wybrane modele teoretyczne (Politeness Theory - Brown & Levinson (1987), Graded Salience Hypothesis - Giora (2003), Dynamic Model of Meaning - Kecskes (2008)), a w dalszej części demonstrują ich wykorzystanie w badaniach o charakterze analitycznym oraz empirycznym. Książka jest bogato ilustrowana, zawiera także obszerną bibliografię literatury poświęconej dyskursowi reklamowemu oraz indeks. The book is an attemtp at extending the scope of methodological insights into the discourse of press advertisements by means of elaborating new models of analysis of this peculiar type of pictorial-textual artefact. The applicability and feasibility of these new models are tested against a rich corpus of press advertisements extracted from Polish, British and Chinese newspapers and magazines. The book is divided into three chapters: the first one constitutes a theoretical introduction, containing an overview of studies on the discourse of advertising, whereas the remaining two first introduce seleced theoretical models (Politeness Theory - Brown & Levinson (1987), Graded Salience Hypothesis - Giora (2003), Dynamic Model of Meaning - Kecskes (2008)) and later demonstrate their analytical potential in the investigation of press advertisements. The book is richly illustrated and contains extensive bibliography of advertising discourse literature, followed by an index.
